Castleberry dad drives drunk, high with kids in car

One might say a Castleberry dad was allegedly living up to his name after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.

Stonie James Cooper, 26, is facing a host of charges after being stopped by Castleberry police officer Troy Staley. Chief Tracy Hawsey said Staley observed Cooper’s vehicle operating erratically.

“At the time of the stop, there were two small children in the car – one of which was not in a car safety seat,” Hawsey said. “After talking with Mr. Cooper, he admitted to smoking marijuana earlier, as well as consuming alcohol.”

As a result, Cooper is charged with driving under the influence, two counts of child endangerment and a number of traffic violations.

Cooper was transported to the Conecuh County Jail, where he spent the night before making bond. The children were picked up by a family member.

“I commend Officer Staley for his actions in getting those kids away from a very dangerous situation,” Hawsey said.

Cooper was one of two arrested by the department in recent days.

Terrell Sanders, 28, is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance after officers alleged found cocaine and prescription pills inside his car.

Hawsey said Officer Blayne Pruett was patrolling Ala. Hwy. 31 when he stopped Sander’s green Dodge Charger on McKinley Street for a traffic violation.

“As we attempted to get the driver’s information, it was observed through the passenger side window that he was attempting to hide something underneath the console,” Hawsey said. “As he exited the vehicle, a large amount of what was believed to be Tramadol was found in his hand.”

Hawsey said a further search of the car revealed an unspecified amount of cocaine.

Sanders was arrested and later released on an unknown bond.
