Phillip Joel Rowell

Brewton

 

Phillip Joel Rowell, 58, of Sowell Road in Brewton, passed away Mon. May 2, 2016, in a Pensacola hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Thurs., May 5, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Byrnes Pitts officiating.

Interment followed in Green Acres Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He was a native and life long resident of Brewton. He was of the Assembly of God faith and a 1976 graduate of T.R. Miller High School. He graduated from Jefferson Davis Community College with a nursing degree. He was a former employee of LV Stabler Hospital in Greenville and South Baldwin Hospital in Foley.

He is survived by parents, Fred and Annie Howington Balkom of Brewton; wife, Carolyn Sanderson Rowell of Brewton; two daughters, Beth Ann Rowell of Troy, and Chrystal (Alex) Jacobs of Waynesboro, Miss.; two brothers, Michael (Dana) Rowell of Brewton and Marty (Hope) Balkom of Troy; and five grandchildren, Neil Lewis, Camille Lewis, Laison Rowell, Craig Hammonds and Emma Jacobs.

He is preceded in death by daughter, Meagan Rowell.

James Levern Peacock

Brewton

 

James Levern Peacock, 74, of Petty Road in Brewton, passed away Sun., May 8, 2016, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services are scheduled for today, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Elder Earnie Calhoun officiating.

Interment will follow in Weaver Cemetery in Brewton, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He was a native of the Byrneville, Fla., Community, a former resident of Milton, Fla., and a long time resident of Brewton. He was of the Assembly of God faith. He attended school in Century and Jay, Fla. He was a U.S. National Guard veteran, and was a former employee at Reid’s Garage in Century, Fla. He was a retired Mill Wright from the Container Corporation of America with 28 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Martin Peacock of Brewton; daughter, Renee Peacock of Gulfport, Miss.; step-son, Mitch (Heidi) Newton of Houston, Texas; daughter-in-law, JoAnne Peacock of Spanish Fort; brother, Vern (Clara) Peacock of Atmore; and three sisters, Mary Ellen Enfinger of Milton, Marjorie (Buddy) Nelson of Byrneville, and Wanda (Henry) Johnson of Foshee, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his son, Greg Peacock; and two daughters, Tonya Marie Cox and Leeta Ann Newton.

Alfred Monroe Adams

Holt, Fla.

 

Alfred Monroe Adams, 88, of Holt, Fla., passed away Thurs., May 5, 2016, in a Crestview, Fla. health care facility.

He was born in Perdido and had been a resident of Flomaton prior to moving to Holt two years ago.  He worked as a maintenance superintendent for the civil service for a number of years.  He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Kathleen Pauley Adams, and Margie Kelley Adams.

He is survived by a son, Alfred Preston Adams of Holt; a brother, Ron Adams of Mississippi; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Craver’s Funeral Home today, May 11 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Funeral services, with military honors, will follow at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with Larry White officiating.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Deacon Kyler Benjamin Sr.

Conecuh County

 

Deacon Kyler Benjamin Sr., 102, passed away on April 26, 2016.

Funeral services were held Tues., May 3 at 2 p.m. at Second St. John Missionary Baptist in East Brewton with the Rev. W.J. Dailey officiating and Presley-Fluker Funeral Directors directing.

Interment followed at Second St. John Cemetery.

He was born in Conecuh County on November 13, 1913 to the late Richard and Nancy Benjamin. He attended school at Boykin Jr. High School in the Boykin Community. He knew the value of education and said on many occasions how he wished he had gone farther in school.

He confessed Jesus Christ at an early age and was a member of Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in the Johnsonville Community. He met the love of his life, Lena Bradley. He stated, “That was the prettiest little girl I had ever seen.” In 1936 this pretty little girl became his wife, and to this union of 73 years 10 children were born.

He moved to Escambia County and moved his church membership to Second St. John Missionary Baptist Church in the Springhill Community. The pastor, staff and members saw the Christian character in him and placed him on the Deacon Board where he served faithfully for over 66 years.

He was responsible in the purchasing of the land for the St. John Cemetery, and Pastor Dailey assigned him the duty as foreman in the construction of the new church. He did not miss a day of being on his post as construction foreman.

He was employed by T.R. Miller Mill Co. in the Forestry Department and retired after 35 years of service. He also maintained his own landscaping and lawn care business for over 65 years. He also loved working in his garden. On many occasions he would be seen riding in his pickup truck with his trusty, tobacco chewing dog, Sport.

He saw many changes from 1913 to 2016, when asked did he ever think that the United States would ever have a black President he said, “No.” But, he was blessed to live long enough to vote for President Obama twice, and each time Deacon Benjamin would see President Obama on television he would say, “Ain’t that our man.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Nancy Benjamin; wife, Lena Benjamin; son, Kyler Benjamin Jr., and brothers, Richard “Dewey”. Henry, David, Simmie, U.L. and Rosenfield “Moot”.

He leaves to cherish his memories four devoted daughters, Retha Frisby, Dorothy William, both of Long Island, N.Y., Shirley (Jeffery) Blount and Janice Benjamin, both of Brewton; five sons, the Rev. James (Queen) Benjamin of Central Islip, N.Y., Charles (Nellie) Benjamin of Albion, Mich., Willie (Kathy) Benjamin of Brewton, Richard (Linda) Benjamin of Mobile, and the Rev. Danny (Janet) Benjamin of Brewton; 32 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren,; two devoted nieces, Carrie Bradley Moncrease and Cora Benjamin Bailey; a very special cousin, Minnie Stallworth; a very special caregiver and friend of the family, Detrick Roberson; one sister-in-law, Addie Benjamin and a host of other relatives, loved ones and friends.

 

Michael Christopher Blue

Brewton

 

Michael Christopher Blue passed away on May 4, 2016.

Funeral services were held Tues., May 10, at Second Saint Siloam Missionary Baptist Church in Brewton with Pastor Willie J. Blue officiating and Presley-Fluker Funeral Directors directing.

Interment followed at Bergen Memorial Cemetery in Brewton.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1971, to the Rev. and Mrs. Willie James Blue of Brewton. He is he eldest of three children. At the age of three years old.

He joined and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at the Second Saint Siloam Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Dr. H.J. Lancaster and his father Pastor Willie Blue. He was a 1989 graduate of T.R Miller High School.

He was very devoted to his family and church family. In spite of his illness , he was an outgoing and loving person. He was a very good artist but never boasted about his talent. He loved to visit the Brewton Public Library, where he volunteered. The Library staff loved him and he loved to be in their presence.

He became an ordained deacon in 2012 and had been a valued deacon for four and a half years. One of his greatest desires was to serve the Lord to his fullest.

He served and worked with the youth at Second Saint Siloam and the Brewton Area Youth basketball, was a board member of the John L. Fisher Community Center, and board member of the Brewton Circle of Transformation.

He is survived and loved by one devoted daughter, Kameisha Andrea’ Blue, parents, Pastor and Mrs. Willie James Blue; brother, Minister Timothy D. Blue; sister, Tiffany L. Blue; grandparents Doris Thomas and Fannie J. Gray; four uncles, Obna and Columbus Gray, James (Carolyn) Humphrey, Thomas  (Cynthia) Harris Sr.; six aunts, Vivian Thomas, Jacqueline Mitchell, Debbie (Devon) Platt, Tykeya (Phillip) Stiers, Toni Thomas Brown and Covetta Hall Britt; two god sisters, Aja and Barbara McConnico Smith; nieces, Alexis, Kiajo, and Nori McConnico; and nephews, Rhowyn and Reagan Stallworth; numerous special friends, Donald (Tiffany) Smith, George (Mildred) Rudolph, Karrie J. Lewis Pride, Keenen Pride, Deacon Howard McMillan, Deacon Terrence Stallworth, Deacon Forrest Lewis, Purvis Smith, Orarie Milton, Latrice Samuel, Avis Milton, Marjorie Smith, Carrie Lewis, Coolidge Gray; and a host of relatives and grieving friends.
