Kindergarten students in Margo Adam’s W.S. Neal Elementary class are feeling a bit more focused thanks to community generosity.

Adams recently asked for donations to purchase “wobble chairs” for her class. Designed to allow students to move quietly while at their desk, the chairs are perfect for getting out the nervous energy of young children.

“I have 18 to 20 students in my classroom with an aide, who is there for about 30 minutes,” Adams said. “Sitting still is a big problem in my classroom. Kindergarteners aren’t known for being the most focused, so these chairs let them do just that by enabling them to be able to move quietly while at their desks.”

Adams said she also has a number of students with attention deficit disorders who benefit from the unique chairs.

“I felt that if I had some Wobble chairs in my classroom it would cut down on the distractions and interruptions that take time away from student engagement and learning,” she said.

“It would cut down on students falling out of chairs, getting up, or scrapping their chairs on the linoleum floor as they wiggle or move about. I felt like they would help my struggling students be able to focus on the task at hand and complete their tasks and meet their goals.

“Now, students can wobble instead of fidgeting during instructional time cutting down on nervous energy, and it’s great,” she said.

The project was funded through a “Donors Choose” program, an online education-focused fundraising site. Donors can scroll through the site and choose a project that inspires them to give. To help other classrooms, visit DonorsChoose.org.
