Margaret ‘Peggy’ Owens 

Brewton

Margaret Beverly Owens, 89, passed away June 26, 2016, in a Pensacola, Fla. care facility.

Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. John Finklea at Fort Crawford Cemetery on Thurs., June 30, at 11a.m. with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.

She was born Margaret Lucille Beverly on Oct. 23, 1926, in Butler County.   She moved to Brewton in 1946 to assume a nursing position at the Rawles Clinic.  She then met and married Brewton native Jennings Lambert Owens in 1948. They had four children.

Known to many as “Peggy,” she spent her entire life in service for others working at the Rawles Clinic, the Holley Hospital, and for both doctors Herman Wood and George T. Perry.

She then worked until retirement as the company nurse for the T.R. Miller Mill Company. After retirement for many years, she continued her service by assisting with in home nursing care.

She was a longtime member of the Brewton First Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Meadorwood Garden Club.  Her passion for flowers was obvious; she spent endless hours in her yard planting and nurturing her plants.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings; infant son, Jennings Lambert Owens Jr.; beloved granddaughter, Beverly Burgess Owens; parents, Leamon and Carrie Beverly; five siblings; and son-in-law, Dr. Robert R. Smith.

She is survived by her children, Beverly Gail Liles (Buddy), Jennings “Bo”  Lambert Owens II  (Kim), both of Brewton, and Walter Brooks Owens (Lisa) of Laurel, Miss. Other survivors include her grandchildren, Traci Owens Vickery (Ian) of Brewton; Mary Margaret Stephenson (David) of Birmingham; Jennings “Tripp” Lambert Owens III of Brewton;  Alexa Brooks Owens of Hattiesburg, Miss.. and Avery Gaines Owens of Laurel; and four great grandchildren, Harrison, Luci, Robert and John.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place,Memphis,TN 38105), the Brewton Tree and Beautification Board ( P.O. Box 368, Brewton, AL 36427) or to the charity of choice.

 

Marion Russell ‘Russ’ Holman Jones

LaFayette

 

Marion Russell ‘Russ’ Holman Jones, 95, passed away on Wed., June 15, 2016 at her home in LaFayette.

Graveside services were held Sat., Jun. 18, at noon at LaFayette City Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Hand officiating and Jeff Jones Funeral Home of LaFayette directing.

She was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Brewton, the youngest of the four children of Annie Hurt and Clarence Perkins Holman. She had grand memories of growing up in Brewton and cherished the lifelong friendships she made there.

Her father’s pharmacy profession took the family briefly to Tuscaloosa, then Montgomery where she graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and attended Huntingdon College. She went on to Peabody College in Nashville and the University of Alabama, returning to Brewton after college to work at the Bank of Brewton.

Through mutual friends, Elinor and Jack Hines, who knew they would be perfect for each other, she met her future husband, Frank Daughdrill Jones. They married in 1949 and moved to his hometown of LaFayette where they were blessed with 53 years together, raising their children, serving the Lord through their church and community and later, enjoying their grandchildren.

She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, always an example of selfless love, patience and faith.

She was proceeded in death by her beloved husband and parents; her sisters, Annie Hurt Milford and Sara Bradley Marshall; and brother, Major Clarence “Jabo” Holman, who gave his life in service during World War II.

She is survived by her children, Jeanetta J. Irvin (Bubba) of Dothan, James F. “Jimbo” Jones of LaFayette and Virginia Stanley Jones of Destin, Fla.; grandsons, Dr. Matthew R. Irvin of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Andrew F. Irvin of Auburn; nieces, Anne Oliver of Mountain Brook and Augusta Andrews (Scott) of Anniston; and nephews, Bill Marshall of Birmingham and Guy Milford (Sandra) of College Station, Texas.

Barbara Ann Jordan

Brewton

 

Barbara Ann Jordan, 69, of St. Nicholas Avenue in Brewton, passed away Tues., June 21, 2016, at her residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held on Sat., June 25, at 11 a.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Lindsey officiating.

Interment followed at Union Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

She was a native and life long resident of Brewton. She attended Rock Hill Assembly of God Church and was a 1965 graduate of T.R. Miller High School. She attended Jefferson Davis Community College and the University of West Florida. She was a former secretary in the electrical industry.

She is survived by special friends, Kim Kelly and Sally Sexton, both of Brewton; aunt, Mary Alice Hale of Brewton; nephew, Chad (Lindsey) Jordan of Brewton; two great nephews, Jason Jordan and Samuel Conner Jordan; one great niece, Haleigh Jordan; cousins, Glenda (Dale) Yoder, Ginger (Avery) Simmons, Shannon (Lauren) Yoder, Addison Yoder and Kennedy Yoder; and sister-in-law, Frankie Jordan.

She was preceded in death by parents, Ealon and Dru Ethel Portwood Jordan; and brother, Jerry Jordan.

Bessie Lee Roach Sims

Pensacola, Fla.

 

Bessie Roach Sims, 71, passed way on June 23, 2016.

Funeral services were held Mon., June 27 at 11 a.m. at Greater Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. J.O. Meeks officiating and Presley-Fluker Funeral Directors directing.

She was born Nov. 18, 1944, in Evergreen to the late William and Georgia Roach. Two siblings, Ethel Warren and William Roach Jr., preceded her in death.

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Greater Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church.

After competing her education in the Conecuh County School system she moved to Pensacola, Fla., and was united in holy matrimony to Thomas Francis Sims.

Later in life, she joined the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until her health started to fail.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories an adopted daughter, Mary “Liz” Davis of Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters, Mary Ellen Davis of Evergreen, Annie B. Carter of Brewton, Christina Cole of Havelock, N.C., and Annie Mae Jackson (Alphonso) of Pensacola; one sister-in-law, Antoinette Diokno of Jacksonville, Fla.; a special niece, Bernice “Niecy” Holmes; eight other nieces; three nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

She loved her family and church family, but most of all she loved God. She will be dearly missed.
