The T.R. Miller volleyball teams jump started it season on a positive note, as the middle school, JV and varsity were able to win in straight sets in its respective matches versus Escambia County on Thursday.

Brewton Middle School topped Atmore 25-8 and 25-16 to win the match.

The JV team won in dominant fashion, taking the first and second set 25-8 and 25-5, respectively. Kaleigh Folsom started the first set with 11 serves in a row. Anna Grace White led the team the second set with 16 serves to give the Lady Tigers a commanding lead.

The Lady Tigers varsity team won its first set 25-10. Sophomore Mallori Floyd led the team with 11 serves. Miller took the second set 25-8 and the third set 25-10. Seniors Allie Nelson and Grace Ruzic led the team with 10 kills apiece. Junior Myra Reiss led the team in assists.

Head coach Terri Lynne Peacock said it was great to start the season off with a win.

“We started off well in sets one and two and were consistent with our serves,” Peacock said. “We had several players who served eight or more serves in a row.  We were able to stay in control of the ball for most of the match. “

Peacock said she was particularly happy with her team’s offensive play.

“At our summer tournament we struggled with inconsistencies in our hitting. Today, we were more comfortable on the front row. Our hitters and our setters were connecting. Overall I was pleased with all of our team’s performances.”

Miller volleyball will next travel to Straughn on Tues., Aug. 30. Games start at 4 p.m. with the middle school, followed by the JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m.
