The Brewton City Council approved $650,000 in land deals Monday. The purchases finalized an 89-acre city industrial park expansion and a nine-acre site that could become a new site for a fire department.

Owned by the Downing family, the new industrial park property is located on Ala. Hwy. 31 between Frit Car and Georgia Pacific and appraised for $408,000; however, City attorney Ed Hines said the family agreed to accept a $250,000 purchase price.

The city will in turn recognize the family’s gift of $160,000 to the city, Hines said. “

The council also voted to purchase a $400,000, 8.9-acre parcel of property on Douglas Avenue, located next to Alabama Power and owned by Sarju Patel.

Mayor Yank Lovelace said there are many benefits of owning the property.

“Two acres of the property will be held out for industrial development sites,” Lovelace said. “There are many different options that the city can use the property for – one such discussed was relocating the fire department there, but that will take a significant grant to happen.”
