Site to feature canoeing, more

Come March, locals will have a new outdoor adventure location in Brewton.

Monday, the Brewton City Council approved a new lease with Compassion for Brewton Outdoor Adventure LLC for the old O’Bannon Park property.

Called “Outdoor Adventure,” the project is the brainchild of New Beginnings Pastor Bo Bell and his wife, Samantha. The site is expected to open March 2017 and will feature swimming, canoeing, tubing, hiking, walking trails, primitive camping and assorted family outdoor activities.

“We want this place to be a wonderful location for you and your family to spend a great day together,” Pastor Bell said. “It’s our mission to make Brewton a better place, and this is just another way we are working to do that.”

Bell said the site will employ six to eight people.

“It really is a beautiful spot back there,” Bell said of the park, which will also feature horseshoe pits, swing sets, gazebos, grills and more. “We hope to be able to offer it as a location for special events such as weddings and family reunions, too.”

Rentals will feature double and single canoes and kayaks, and trips will begin off Ala. Hwy. 41 and Tippens Eddy Road.

“There are also six miles of hiking trails that people can enjoy,” Bell said. “We want to create a place for the community with the convenience of town, and this will allow us to do that.”

Crews will begin work in the coming days to upgrade the park, Bell said.
