Coastal teams will keep names

No need to worry, the Jan. 11 consolidation of local community colleges will not affect the names of the individual athletic programs for the foreseeable future.

With the joining of the campuses as Coastal Alabama Community College, what will remain to stay in the foreseeable future are each school’s identity as separate athletic programs.

Each campus will continue their athletic programs as their individual National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) memberships. Each campus will also maintain its individual nicknames and mascots.

“The games will still be conference games since the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) and the NJCAA still recognize the programs as separate teams,” said CACC Director of Public Relations and Marketing, Sara Godwin.

“For example, (FSCC) Sun Chiefs versus (JDCC) Warhawks will be the Coastal Alabama Bay Minette Sun Chiefs versus the Coastal Alabama Brewton Warhawks. We have no plans to change athletics outside of the college name. We will still field the Warhawks from Brewton, Eagles from Monroeville and Sun Chiefs out of Bay Minette.”

Coastal Alabama president Gary Branch said the combining of the schools will bring out the best in competition from the three schools.

“I expect this consolidation will increase the rivalries of these campuses,” Branch said. “With three very talented athletic programs, Coastal Alabama Community College will provide competitive athletic programs and an active campus life like none before.”

In basketball action, the Coastal Alabama Warhawks will travel to play the Coastal Alabama Eagles on Mon., Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. The two teams will face off in Brewton on Mon., Feb. 27, at 7 p.m.

The Warhawks will travel to play the Coastal Alabama Sun Chiefs on Thurs., Feb. 2 at 7:15 p.m. The two teams will face off in Brewton on Thurs., Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
