Talk about coming full circle.

Next Wednesday, child advocate and litigation attorney Elizabeth “Liz” Huntley will do just that as she presents at T.R. Miller High School. Her visit is being sponsored, in part, by the Communities of Transformation group.

Huntley, whose new book “More Than a Bird,” will share her message of trial and triumph in the community where she got her start.

“When you hear Liz’s story, you cannot help but be inspired,” said Anita Watson, COT director. “Her story is exactly what Circles of Transformation is all about.” COT is an innovative ministry that partners low-income families with community volunteers. These partnerships help participants make and implement successful future life plans.

Huntley

Huntley practices law at Lightfoot, Franklin, & White LLC in Birmingham and regularly serves as a motivational speaker throughout the country. In addition to her corporate defense litigation practice, she spends a significant amount of time on representing and consulting with governmental and non-profit agencies that serve children and families.

In her inspirational autobiography, Huntley shares how she overcame nightmarish events and tremendous adversity during her childhood.

“The book details her emotional journey living in poverty and sexual abuse and profiles the men and women whom she believes God placed in her life to mentor and help her meet her full potential,” Watson said. “One of these people is from Brewton.”

An inspirational leader, Huntley also participates in numerous civic and professional organizations. Much of her volunteer time is dedicated to expanding high quality Pre-K to all four year olds in Alabama.  Appointed by the Governor of Alabama, she also serves on the Governor’s Task Force on Prevention of Sexual Abuse in Children.

“When I was eight years old, my pastor inspired me with a simple message: ’If God takes care of the birds, He will take care of me because I am more than a bird,’” Huntley said. “His sermons gave me hope and guided me through some of the darkest days of my life. I want my story to encourage children in similar situations to know they can reach their dreams and to encourage more adults to become advocates for them like so many did for me.”

COT will sponsor a book signing at 1 p.m. on March 8 in the TRM auditorium. COT invites anyone interested “in a better Brewton for all to spend a few moments with Liz Huntley,” Watson said.
