Elizabeth Iona Rigby Ellis

Brewton

Elizabeth Iona Rigby Ellis, 95, passed away peacefully with her loving daughters by her side on Thurs., April 13, 2017.

Graveside services were held Sat., April 15, at 10 a.m. at Fort Crawford Cemetery with Bro. Bernie Raines officiating and Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

She was known for her strength, love of God, her beautiful gardens and her delicious meals. She will be deeply missed. She remained happy and kind to her daughters, Betty, Debbie, and Angela, and their families. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those that truly loved her.

She was born Dec. 7, 1921, to William and Edith Rigby in Canoe. She was a spirited young lady from the beginning, getting into trouble one day coming home from school, accepting a ride on a motor scooter from a young lad, whilst wearing a dress, no less.

She was the eldest daughter of two sisters, the late Ruth Rigby Jackson of Flomaton and Carolyn Rigby Hassebrock of Cantonment, Fla., and two brothers, the William Rigby of Sacramento, Calif., and Leon Rigby of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Her brother William was in the Army. He had a buddy named L.J. Ellis. Together they walked into the 5 & Dime Elmore’s store where she worked in downtown Atmore.

She and L.J. were married on April 3, 1941. They had five children. The three daughters are Betty Ann Ellis Fagundes of LaGrange, Ga., Deborah Kay Ellis Griffin of Roswell, Ga., and Angela Sharon Ellis Moore of Pensacola Beach, Fla.

The couple was instrumental in the development of Cedar Hill Baptist Church in East Brewton, where they both devotedly served and worshiped. She served as superintendent of Sunday School, on many advisory boards, and many pulpit committees. She was also a Sunday school teacher for years.

She and L.J. loved to have the church over on Wednesdays and Sundays after services. She would lay out a beautiful spread of delicious food served on her finest china. She frequently provided transportation to many people who didn’t have a way to get to church or whose parents didn’t normally go to church.

Some 30 years after the fact, a grown man timidly came up to Elizabeth, and quietly told her with tears in his eyes, “If you hadn’t kept picking me up every Sunday, I wouldn’t be a Christian today. Thank you.”

She and L.J. had an accounting firm together. They worked side-by-side, ledger-by-ledger. And when it was time to say goodbye to that segment of their life, they continued to work hard together on their rental properties and their own home.

Her one and only Love passed away Dec. 2, 1996. They were married 54 years. She never remarried. She remained in their home, the one he built, until she turned 89.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Betty Ellis and Joe Fagundes, Debbie Ellis and Steve Griffin, Angela Ellis and Peter Moore; sister, Carolyn (Johnny) Hassebrock; grandchildren, Joseph III (Deanna) Fagundes, David (Beth) Fagundes, Meghan Conklin, Stephanie Griffin, Carmen Ellis (Bruce) Patterson, Karen Ellis (Terry) Bodie, Daniel, Jr. ( Stacy) Ellis, Katie Ellis ( Chris ) Mixon, and Kyle (Megan) Ellis; great grandchildren, Christopher Jackson, Benjamin Patterson, Jillian Patterson, Richard Jackson, Jackson Fagundes, Elizabeth Fagundes, Jon Thomas Fagundes, David Keith Fagundes Jr., Joseph Fagundes IV, and Madeline Anne Ellis; and two great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by one grandchild, Jonathan Gagundes.
