Students learn archery safety

Last summer, the Brewton City Council awarded $10,000 to jump-start an archery program at Brewton Middle School.

This week, students are seeing the use of the funds, by putting the new equipment to use. Instructing the students was BMS principal and certified archery instructor Madelyn Cave.

Cave is training the students with the help of physical education teachers Jeff Waldrop and Terri Lynne Peacock.

BMS P.E. Coach Jeff Waldrop demonstrates how to aim the bow.

“We’re having a blast,” said Cave. “We’re so thrilled to have the equipment. The students are showing an interest and it’s great to see. We want to thank the city council and mayor for their support.”

The equipment includes 20 bows, arrows, targets and safety netting.

On Tuesday, fifth and sixth grade students finished safety training, and will today begin shooting. Seventh and eighth grade students will complete safety training today.

Cave said archery will be taught to all the students. As interest grows in the program throughout the end of this school year and in the next, the school will look to establish a club to compete in competition.
