Memorial Day event set
Escambia County will celebrate Memorial Day with a ceremony on Fri., May 26, at 9 a.m.
Joe Dozier, a representative with the local American Legion, said this year’s ceremony will follow its traditional agenda with the naming of local fallen soldiers as well as experience a visit from members of Brewton’s late Sgt. William Wayne “Billy Wayne” Seay. Seay received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his sacrifice near Ap Nhi, Republic of Vietnam on Aug. 25, 1968. Seay, who suffered a devastating wound to his right wrist, led his fellow soldiers to safety and defended them with rifle fire using his left hand. As a result of the heroic action, Seay was mortally wounded by a sniper’s bullet.
Seay was laid to rest in Brewton’s Weavers Cemetery. The procession will move to his graveside following that Friday’s ceremony.
