E.B. farmer’s market seeks vendors

Every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. people of the community can look forward to purchasing fresh produce and handmade products at the East Brewton Farmers Market located just across the bridge on Murder Creek.

East Brewton native Greg Fleming was instrumental in spear heading the project of bringing a farmers market to East Brewton. He spent 19 years in East Brewton before joining the Marine Corps. Today, he sells fresh produce out of Monroeville and Brewton.

Fleming presented the idea to the East Brewton city council and Mayor Terry Clark at a past city council meeting. The market had its opening this past Tuesday. Rainy weather this week made it tough for other vendors to attend, but Fleming said he envisions the market to be something special for the community.

“Back in my day people, especially seniors, use to make it an event to go to their local market on a certain day of the week,” Fleming said. “It was a tradition. This is a good place for that. I think it’s a good thing for the people of East Brewton to get out and shop for fresh local produce and items.”

Danny Presley of Presley Custom Knives and Leather Goods was onsite for the inaugural opening of the market.

“I think this market will be good for the community and for small business,” Presley said.

Fleming said his produce, as well as Presley and others will be a mainstay at the market. Suzy Q’s Bread, the Pink Box Bakery and Keith’s Dips will be on hand in the future.

“We all worked together in Monroeville and Brewton,” Fleming said.

The farmer’s market follows the state of Alabama farmer’s market regulations set by the Farmer’s Market Authority

Fleming said the market is qualified as a local produce store where senior citizens can redeem their vouchers. “I will look to help seniors learn about the nutritional program so those interested can apply for vouchers,” Flemings said.
