Nancy Pate

Castleberry

Nancy “Bettevy” Pate, 62, passed away on Tues., June 20, 2017 in Castleberry.

Graveside were held Fri., June 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Pate Family Cemetery with Father Madden officiating. Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes LLC was in charge of all arrangements.

She was a native of Marksville, La., and has resided in Castleberry for the past 35 years. She was a member of the St. Maurice Catholic Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Milby and Shirley Bettevy; and one brother, Nicholas Bettevy.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, John Pate; one son, Jake Daniel (Samantha) Pate, both of Castleberry; one daughter, Ava Pate (Joey) Brewton of Evergreen; two brothers, Ronald Bettevy and Darryl Bettevy, both  of Marksville, La.; and three grandchildren, Aaron Brewton, Kinsley Brewton and Madison Pate.

Barnett David ‘B.D.’ Hendricks Jr.

Jay, Fla.

Barnett David “B.D.” Hendricks Jr., 83, of Jay, Fla., passed away June 29, 2017, in Jay Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held Sun., July 2, at 4 p.m. at Cornerstone Christian Church in Jay with the Rev. Ebb Hagan, the Rev. Laura Weant, and the Rev. Sara Shaver officiating.

Interment followed in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Jay with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.

He was born in Oneonta and was a long time resident of Jay. He was a member of the Jay United Methodist Church, and a 1954 graduate of Jay High School. He was a former employee of Flomaton Wholesale before he began part-time farming in the early 1960s. He became a full-time farmer in the early seventies, as well as a partner in G&H Wholesale in Flomaton.

He leaves behind a legacy of love for his church, his family and agriculture.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Virginia Golden Hendricks; son, Ricky (Nina) Hendricks; daughter, Vicki (Tim) Laney; four grandsons, Brandt Hendricks, Rush Hendricks, Tanner Laney and Todd (Hannah) Laney; granddaughter, Tessa Hendricks; great grandson, Eli Laney; three beloved sisters, Betty (James) Salter, Faye (Waymon) Cook, and Jean Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.

The family extends a special thanks and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. C. David Smith and the Jay Medical Staff, Jay Hospital Staff, and Covenant Hospice for their compassionate care during his extended illness and hospitalization.

Shirley Ann Calhoun Sanders

East Brewton

Shirley Ann Calhoun Sanders, 69, of Forrest Avenue in East Brewton, passed away Sat., July 1, 2017, in a local nursing facility after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Mon., July 3, at noon at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Greer officiating. Interment will be today, Wed., July 5, in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Ozark, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.

She was a native and former resident of Ozark, before moving to East Brewton in 2006. She was a member of the Divine Temple Church. She attended Carroll High School in Ozark and was  a retired restaurant manager.

She is survived by her son, Larry (Shawn) Sanders of Birmingham; two daughters, Judy (Robby) Williams of Brewton, and Rebecca Frye of Monroeville; seven grandchildren, Michael Frye, Chasity Ferguson, Brittany Williams, Peyton Sanders, Brady Sanders, Dewayne Williams and Alyssa Williams; and nine great grandchildren.
