Thirty years ago, in 1987, officials said Aug. 3, would be the target date for opening a satellite office of the Escambia County Courthouse in Atmore.

The city reopened the Lee Street Bridge after some work, but a few days later it was announced that the bridge had some rusty pilings and would be shut down again to do some repair amounting to $50,000.

It was announced in The Brewton Standard that recent studies showed that Escambia County had one of the highest mortality rates in the nation.

Hopefully that has changed.

O’Bannon Park was in use by the public and Miranda Manning was photographed on a see-saw having a good time.

It’s a shame that this area is not utilized  as well as it could be. I have attended a lot of happy events there and I bet you have too.

Members of the W.S. Neal High School Band traveled to Disney World, Sea World, and other sights in Orlando, Fla. The band director, Dennis Hadaway said the students were so well-behaved that he hoped they could plan on a trip to Washington, D.C. for the next year.

Arson was suspected at a home near Keego. A lady died in that fire and suspects were being interviewed.

The elevator at city hall was installed and was open to the public on June 23, 1987.

Now if I have this right, this must have been where the city hall used to be downtown. I don’t think there are any elevators in the current city hall. At least I have never seen one.

There was a long line of people waiting to get their chance to dive into the pool at Jefferson Davis Junior College at YMCA Camp. The photograph in the newspaper showed a lot of kids and the lines were very long. According to the newspaper, the weather was such that a dip in the pool would be welcomed.

Nettie Hart, a resident of Westgate Village, was crowned Miss Westgate Village.

Three men were charged with the bombing of Escambia County High School. In addition to those three, there were several others who were juveniles.

A fashion show was held in Bell Chapel of First Baptist Church of Brewton. Models were members of the Escambia County Junior Miss and Gulf Coast Modeling Agency.
