Flomaton

O.D. Cash, 79, of Flomaton, passed away on Thurs., July 27, 2017, at Century Health and Rehabilitation Center in Century, Fla.

Funeral services were held on Sun., July 30, at 2 p.m. at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rusty Burnham and Bro. Jerry Brantley officiating and Flomaton Funeral Home directing. Interment followed in Fort Crawford Cemetery in East Brewton.

Pallbearers were Alex Cash, Andrew Cash, Justin Smith, Jake Smith, Landon Cash and Taylor Cash. Honorary pallbearer was Jeremy Burch.

He was born in Fort, Deposit and had been a lifetime member of the Flomaton and McCall areas for more than 35 years where he worked as a car salesman. He was a member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Cora Bowen Cash; wife, Betty Morris Cash; sisters, Dot McCurdy, Wanda Cash, Bobbi Frazier, and Mildred Faye Cash; and brother, Allen Cash.

He is survived by his sons, Danny Cash of Flomaton, Roger (Bama) Cash of Brewton, Robert (Debbie) Cash of Flomaton; daughters, Linda (Randy) Baggett, Marilyn Cash, and Carolyn (Joey) Settle, all of Brewton; brothers, Barney (Irene) Cash of Century, George (Ann) Cash of Bay Minette, William Cash of Mobile, Odell (Linda) Cash of Tuscaloosa, Gene (Aggie) Cash of Nashville, Tenn., and Shelby Cash of Texas; sisters, Shirley (Wayne)Owens of McCall Community, Linda (Roy) Batte of Brewton, AL, Becky Cash of Pensacola, Fla., and Joyce Erskin of Devilla, Texas; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mabel Louise Jerkins

East Brewton

Mabel Louise Jerkins, 79, passed away Sun., July 30, 2017, at her East Brewton residence.

Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 2, at noon from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with Bro. William Joyner officiating.

Visitation will be held at Craver’s Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until noon service time.

She was born in Okaloosa County, Fla., and had lived in the Dixie Community before moving to East Brewton. She worked as a cook at Mr. B’s Quick Burger for a number of years, and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jerkins Sr.

She is survived by three sons, John (Jackie) Jerkins Jr. of Wetumpka, James Jerkins of East Brewton, and Allen (Karen) Jerkins of Brewton; adopted son, Marcus (Chrystal) Jones of Brewton; two daughters, Wanda (Eddie) Frazier, and Leslie Jerkins, both of East Brewton; two brothers, Mac Jernigan of Dothan, and Leon Jernigan of Ft. Walton, Fla.; one sister, Dorothy Avera of West Monroe, La.; special friend, Sylvia Spears of Brewton; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rudine Maddox Garrett

Brewton

Rudine Maddox Garrett, 83, of Old Bay Road in Brewton, passed away Mon. July 31, 2017, in a Pensacola, Fla., nursing facility after a brief illness.

Visitation will be held Thurs., Aug. 3, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Brewton.

Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton with the Rev. Jeff Edwards. Interment will follow in Green Acres Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton.

She was a native and long time resident of Covington County. She was a member of Catawba Springs Baptist Church, a 1952 graduate of Florala High School and a homemaker.

She is survived by son, Randy (Jamie) Garrett of Brundidge; daughter, Debra (Tad) Gray of Brewton.

Velma Jean Samuel Johnson Smith

Brewton

Velma Jean Samuel Johnson Smith transitioned into peaceful eternal rest on July 14, 2017, in Brewton, after God’s gift of life for 64 years.

Funeral services were held Fri., July 21, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Pastor Duran K. Odoms officiating and Presley Fluker Funeral Directors directing. Interment followed at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Cemetery.

She was the fourth child of the late Willie Samuel and Gladys Samuel, born Oct. 17, 1952.

She graduated in 1971 from Evergreen High School. She grew up in the Johnsonville

Community. She worked at Alatex Manufacturing in Andalusia for more than 20 years as well as Church’s Chicken in Brewton. She furthered her education by studying as a nursing assistant at Reid State Technical College in Evergreen.

Affectionately known to many as “Jean” she would greet you with that smile she was known for.

She enjoyed high school football games and seeing her son and grandsons play football. She was a person who never turned down an opportunity to travel with her sister-in-law, Dorothy. They were traveling and eating partners. She loved her family especially those grandchildren. She was a good and loving mother; a nurturing grandmother, and a kind sister. Her favorite phrases, “I heard that” and “Must be nice.”

Along with her father, she was also preceded in death by sister, Shellie Samuel.

She is survived by four loving sons, Timothy, Cashawndre (Melanie), Antonio (Frances) and James (Latoya); 11 grandchildren, Ivory, Miles, Makai, Malik, Ashanti, Somaya, James Jr., Kendal, Kadryan and Ambreal; and one great grandson, Kyrie.

She is also survived by her nurturing mother, Gladys Oliver Samuel; four sisters, Angretta (Sam), Lillie, Janice and Betty (Jimmy); four brothers, Willie (Dorothy), Walter, Larry and Willie Raz (Debra), two aunts, Ella V. Carthon of Brewton, and Barbara Samuel of Pensacola, Fla.; two uncles, C. B. McGlown of Brewton, Pastor Ecclesiastes Oliver of Omaha, Neb.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and a devoted friend, Margaret “Soot” Jackson of Brewton.

Doris Codelia Byrd Rowell

Montevallo

Doris Codelia Byrd Rowell, 78, of Montevallo, passed away Mon., July 24, 2017, at her residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Thurs., July 27, at 11 a.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Joey Ogletree officiating. Interment followed in Fidelis Methodist Church Cemetery in Fidelis, Fla., with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.

She was a native and former resident of Jay, Fla., before moving to Montevallo in 2014. She was of the Baptist faith, a graduate of Jay High School, and a homemaker.

She is survived by her son, Terry (Leisha) Rowell of Pace, Fla.; daughter, Sherry Traweek of Montevallo; four sisters, Ella White of Jay, Frances Olson of Fayelleville, Ga., Helen Joy Clark of Georgia, and Barbara Mallahan of Theodore; four grandchildren, Brad (Melissa) Rowell, Samantha (Jeffrey) Lacy, Tabitha (Mike) Keller, and Megan (Chad) Davis; and three great grandchildren, Cole, Madelyn and Brody.

She is preceded in death by her husband of more than 30 years, Bill Rowell; two sons, Garry Rowell and Gregory Rowell; four brothers; and two sisters.

Bucky Russell Ingram

Brewton

Bucky Russell Ingram, 51, of Wallace Road in Brewton, passed away Wed., July 26, 2017.

Funeral services were held on Mon., July 31, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Dunn, the Rev. Larry Watts, and the Rev. Tommy Quick officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Billy Murphy, Chris Carr, Michael Carr, Hank Bryan, Billy Johnson and James McDowell. Honorary pallbearer was Joey Shultz.

He was a native and long-time resident Brewton, and had lived previously in Monroeville and Bermuda before returning to live in the Brewton area. He was a member of the W.S. Neal High School Class of 1984, and was a welding instructor at Alabama Southern College and worked as a millwright at Alabama River Newsprint.  He was a member of East Brewton First Baptist Church. He was a fan of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernie C. Ingram and Shirley Brooks Ingram.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Jo Murphy Ingram of Brewton; two sons, Brandon Ingram of Brewton, and Cameron Ingram of Troy; one daughter, Jessica (Chris) Freeman Marion of Brewton; sisters, Barbara (James E.) McDowell of Geneva, and Charlotte (Willie) Colvin of Killen; grandchildren, Kirra, Zac, Koltyn, William and Eleanor; father and mother-in-law, Billy and Catherine Murphy of East Brewton; sister-in-law, Anita (Sparky) Boutwell of Flomaton; nieces, Robyn (Chris) Carr of Enterprise, and Jamie Colvin of England; great-nephew, Mitchell Carr of Enterprise; and special friends, Billy Johnson and Chrystal Hillman, both of Brewton.

Steven Douglas Burch

Steven Douglas “Steve” Burch, 50, of County Road No. 6 in Repton, passed away Wed., July 26, 2017, in a Mobile health care facility after a brief illness.

A memorial service will be announced by the family at a later date

He was born in Evergreen, and had been a life-long resident of Repton. He was a member of the Repton High School Class of 1984, and was the owner of B & B Forestry. He was an avid Auburn fan and served as assistant fire chief with the Lenox Volunteer Fire Department. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Burch; parents, Robert and Charlotte Burch, all of Repton; sisters, Sandy “Toost” (Ronnie) DeWise of Uriah, and Tina (Willie) Cobb of Repton; special nieces, Kaitlyn (Robert) Chason of Robertsdale, Chloe Robinson of Repton, and Tiffany (Dillon) Odom of Evergreen; special nephew, Jeremy DeWise of Atmore; step-daughter, Kristy (James) Rucker of Opp; step-son, Derek (Tracy) Brooks of Atmore; four step-grandchildren, Christian, Cameron, TJ, and Eli Brooks; uncle, Odell (Gail) Burch of Brewton; and aunts, Patsy (Tommy) Chapman of Evergreen, Alice (Paul) Flemming of Lenox, Gloria (Bobby) Boatwright of Frisco City, Gail (Cecil) Partin of Mexia, Betty Burch of Lenox, and Debra Burt of Evergreen.

Jean Ophelia Moore Long

Brewton

Jean Ophelia Moore Long, 90, of Brewton, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 28, 2017, at the Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Graveside services were held on Sun., July 30, at 2:30 pm at Good Hope Cemetery in Dozier.

Jean was born on February 26, 1927 in Dozier to Dempsey Clark Moore and Fannie Bozeman Moore. She graduated from Tallassee High School and Troy State Teacher’s College with a degree in elementary education.

In 1947, she married Arthur Bruce Long, and together they had four children, Melinda, Bo (Gina), Mike (Kay) and Amy Stephens (Tommy).

She loved playing bridge and drinking coffee with friends in Brewton. She was an active member of her church and a faithful mother and wife.

She is survived by her four children, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, two granddaughters, Hannah Reeves (Steve) and Leah Wright (Jereme); and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of Sunset Brown-Service Funeral Home in Northport.

Dwight Jerry Gray

Brewton

Dwight Jerry Gray, 73, passed away Sat., July 29, 2017 in the Brewton hospital.

Graveside funeral services were held on Tues., Aug. 1,  at 10 a.m. at Ridge Road Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Mark Gray officiating and Craver’s Funeral Home directing.

He was born in Conecuh County, and had been a resident of the Brewton area for the past 53 years. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves, and worked as a Power House Operator at Container Corp./Smurfit-Stone for 31 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy Rae Baggett Gray; a daughter, Sonya (Rance) Blackman, both of Brewton; brothers, Allen (Elaine) Gray, Mickey (Erline) Gray, Lawrence (Judy) Gray, Huey (Martha) Gray, all of Castleberry, and Martin Gray of Andalusia; sisters, Mary (Wesley) Baggett of Castleberry, Nancy (Doug) Pearson of Repton, and Delores Gray of Castleberry; two grandchildren, Logan (Whitney) Blackman, and Landon (Savannah Freeman) Blackman; and two great-grandchildren, Waylon Blackman, and Kenley Blackman.

William Loyce DeFee

East Brewton

William Loyce “Cowboy” DeFee, 76, of Simmons Street in East Brewton, passed away Thurs. July 27, 2017, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Tues., Aug.1, at 11 a.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Cox officiating. Interment followed in Pine Grove Cemetery in Bay Minette, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.

He was a native of Margaral, and a long time resident of East Brewton. He was of the Assembly of God faith and a retired truck driver from Herrington’s Logging, Poole Truck Line, and H & H Trucking.

He is survived by his two sons, Herston (Lisa) DeFee of Flomaton, and Kevin DeFee of Evergreen; daughter, Teresa (Joe) Rylas of Flomaton; grandchildren, Jennifer Rayburn of Texas, and Larry Martin of Flomaton; two great grandchildren; one niece; and a number of nephews.

He is preceded in death by brothers, Calvin DeFee and Nolan DeFee.

Alice Kate Harold Summerville, 94, of Belleville Avenue in Brewton, passed away Tues., July 25, 2017, in a local nursing facility after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Thurs., July 27, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Scott and the Rev. Tony McCullough officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.

She was a native of East Brewton, and a long time resident of Brewton. She was a member of the Brewton First United Methodist Church, and a graduate of W.S. Neal High School. She retired from the advertising department of The Brewton Standard with more than 20 years of service.

She is survived by her two daughters, Kaye (Jim) Olsen of Poplarville, Miss., and Neita (Mick) Blackledge of Tuscaloosa; brother, Frank Harold of Pace, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Knue, Steven Olsen, Robert Summerville, William Blackledge and Russell Blackledge; and four great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by parents, Oscar and Mamie Jones Harold; husband, Hale Summerv; son, Bobby Summerville; brother, Buster Harold; two sisters, Inez Sowell and Annie Criswell; grandchild, Samuel Blackledge; and great grandchild, Jacob Knue.

Willie Earl Parker II, 47, of Jay Road in Brewton, passed away Thurs., July 12, 2017.

Memorial services will be held at a later date and time with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton.

He was a native and long time resident of Mobile, before moving to Brewton.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a truck driver in the industrial industry. He loved fishing with his dad, working in the garden, and doing woodwork making canes, signs, and other things for friends and family.

He is survived by his father Willie E. “Bill” Parker of Brewton; brother, Leland (Leah) Parker of Perdido Key, Fla.; sister, Katrina Parker of Brewton; aunt, Ginger (David) Hise; nephews, Ian Parker, Lance Parker; niece, Lauren Morris; and great niece, Emmalynn Booker.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Hart Parker; and brother, Kenneth Parker.

Scott Key Hillman Sr., 74, passed away Mon., July 24, 2017, at his Brewton residence.

Graveside funeral services were held on Thurs., July 27, at 2 p.m. at Union Cemetery with the Rev. James Aubrey Wilson officiating.

Pallbearers were Lyle Hillman, Jack Burns-Hillman Wilson, Robin Davis, Frank Barnes and Manuel Battaglia

He was a native and life long resident of Brewton. He was a graduate of the T.R. Miller High School Class of 1961, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked as an electronic switching technician for Bell South, AT&T and Southern Bell. He was a member of the Communications Workers of America, co-founder of Brewton Amateur Radio Union; and was a fan of the Auburn Tigers. He was a member of East Brewton First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William Hillman, Jr. and Margaret Carden Hillman.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Barnes Hillman; a son, Scott (Elizabeth) Hillman, both of Brewton; a daughter, Windy (Tim) Hillman of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Charles Hillman, III of Brewton; one sister, Kathleen (Robin) Davis of Pensacola, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Lyle Travis Hillman, Ashley Brooke Hillman, and Jack Burns-Hillman Wilson.
