Life for kindergarten teachers and students will become a little easier this year.

For the first year in Brewton Elementary School history, kindergarten students will have classrooms in the main building with their peers.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have them on the main campus,” Principal Anne Lambert said.

Although the plan had been in the works for a number of years, Lambert said the enrollment numbers were never right to allow the switch.

“This year, the numbers were perfect,” Lambert said. “We now have enough space for all of the students in the main building.

“There are four kindergarten classes and four first-grade classes, so we can fit them all on one hall, which is wonderful.”

The change required seven or eight classrooms to be moved, along with extra cleaning.

Lambert said the move was not an easy one but the kindergarten teachers are “extremely excited.”

Previously, the kindergarten classrooms were housed in the Brewton City School Board of Education building across the street from the elementary school.

“We had to bus the students across the street for lunch, and back across after lunch,” Lambert said. “The teachers were losing instructional time for that.”

Teachers and administrators hope that the transition will benefit teachers and students, and be more convenient for parents.
