It’s been only 10 years since 2007, but in some ways it seems like such a long time. Of note in The Brewton Standard was the raise in prices of garbage and trash tees. Trash fees rose from $13.65 to $18 per month in Brewton.

There were discussions going on about a proposed sale of Dogwood Hills to be used as a place for the new middle school. I remember that being a subject that everyone had an opinion about. You were either for it or against it. The sale did not happen, but the golf course at the old country club has been sold and I bet you there will be lots of discussion about that before long. You have to admit that Dogwood Hills is a place of beauty.

Walter Lewis was in town to be interviewed for a documentary film about football in Alabama. Lewis is a former football player for T.R. Miller High School and went on to play for “the Bear” at the University of Alabama.

The weather was very hot during this time even though the summer was easing on out. Local doctors were warning people to take precautions to keep from having heat related problems.

Kids were getting off to school and a new Walgreen’s was going up on the corner of Douglas Lane and Douglas Avenue. It seems that that was being built just yesterday.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Fuqua celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

I spotted one of my old columns, “Forgotten Trails” telling the story of the Downing Industrial School in East Brewton. This school is no more, but it was a top of the line school for girls when girls got the short end of the stick when it came to education. This school sent many young ladies out into the world with an education that would match any school.

Smurfit-Stone Mill was sold to Georgia-Pacific. All employees were terminated and everyone had to go through a new hiring process. Although it made some employees mad, the end result was to have the cream of the crop to be rehired.

Escambia County Superintendent of Education was to recommend school suspensions for the students who called in a bomb threat to the school at Flomaton.

Channel 5, WKRG, weatherman, Alan Sealls made a visit to Brewton Middle School to talk to students about the weather.

PGA golfer, Boo Weekley, a member of Brewton Country Club was in town for a tournament in his honor.
