Dorothy Elizabeth (Renfroe) Wiggins

Flomaton

Dorothy Elizabeth (Renfroe) Wiggins, 86, of Flomaton, died Mon., April 23, 2018, in her home after a prolonged illness.

She was the youngest of seven children born to Jim and Florence (Crappes) Renfroe, and a great-great granddaughter of one of Flomaton’s founding pioneer families.  Dot, as she was affectionately known, graduated from Century High School, and in 1950 married James David Wiggins of East Brewton.  She was preceded in death by her husband.

After raising four children, she, at age 40, returned to school and fulfilled her childhood dream to become a nurse.  As a LPN, she worked at community hospitals in Flomaton and Jay. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Flomaton, and frequently volunteered for charity fundraising causes. A beloved story about Dot reveals a side of her that many who respected her lifelong commitment to hard work and duty might find surprising. As a teen she once skipped youth choir practice, much to her mother’s later disciplinary ‘correction’, and accepted a dare to jump off the old U.S. 31 bridge into Big Escambia Creek. Quite a leap of faith even in those days.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Lou Lowery of Allentown, Fla., and Margaret Nordan of Flomaton; four children, David Wiggins of DeLand, Fla., Gary Wiggins of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Ronnie Wiggins of Brewton, and Diane Thompson of Bay Minette; eleven grandchildren; eleven great, grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild.

Graveside services were held on Thurs., April 26, at Flomaton Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. Tim Tew officiating and Flomaton Funeral Home directing.
