The Men’s Ministry of Brewton First United Methodist Church reached a remarkable milestone last week – they built their 400th ramp.

The men built the 400th ramp for Madeline Carr on Laurel Road in Brewton.

Durwood Mantel said the ministry began eight years ago when a lady at FUMC need a ramp, and it just took off from there.

Mantel said the men average three hours building a ramp, with the largest ramp they ever built taking four hours.

The men build ramps in Brewton, East Brewton, Atmore, Flomaton and Castleberry.

Mantel said usually four to eight men work on the ramps.

Those who participated in the 400th ramp build were Pastor Bobby Elisor, Mantel, Buck Farrior, Butch McKenzie, Mike Edwards, Frank Reid, Randy Dewberry, Don Jackson and Pat Poole.

Mantel said that group pays for the ramps through donations and selling hams and Boston butts.

“We’ve done real good lately,” he said. “We keep a book of eight to 10 on there who need ramps. We normally do one per week. If someone needs it in an emergency, we’ll do that.”

Mantel said that those who need ramps may call the Brewton FUMC.

“It’s a good feeling when you walk away and see someone can now get in and out of their homes,” he said.
