Marcus Hall has been hosting STEM sessions on Saturdays in the John L. Fisher Community Center for the local children for a few years.

“I’m originally from Brewton,” Hall said. “Back when I was little, there was a lot more things to do, so we wanted to give that same opportunity to the kids.”

During the four-hour-long sessions, the children get the opportunity to learn about civil engineering methods to building a SeaPerch to creating slime.

Hall said he was inspired to start these sessions because he loves children, and with his degree in mechanical engineering, he knew that he could really contribute to these children’s lives.

“If you look at the nice paying jobs, majority of them are STEM related,” Hall said. “We want to get them thinking that they can do something aside from the same routine of go to school, get out and go work at the mill. There is more out there.”

Hall said hearing the laughing sounds of the kids and seeing how eager they are to learn is all the motivation he needs to keep these sessions going.

But Hall isn’t the only one who loves every second of these Saturday sessions.

“My favorite thing about coming here is the activities that we get to do,” fourth grader Ryan Smith said.

“I love how every Saturday is something new,” 10th grader Ziah Watson said.
