The Brewton Town and Gown Players will be holding auditions for their summer production of The Wizard of Oz.

DOROTHY GALE: female, 13-25 (Mezzo/Mix) Young Kansas girl, earnest, expressive, and strong-willed, in search of something more. Very strong singer who moves well.

SCARECROW: male/female, 16-55 (Baritone/Tenor) Plucky and clever in a pinch, even while lacking a brain. Strong actor with an honest quality. Excellent dancer – acrobatic skills a bonus.

TIN MAN: male/female, 16-55 (Baritone/Tenor) Desperate for a heart. A kind-hearted romantic. Singing and dance required.

COWARDLY LION: male/female, 16-55 (Baritone) A mix of bravado and cowardice. Should move well. Cuddly actor with excellent comic timing.

WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: female, 25-60. Character villain with an over-the-top stage presence. Excellent comedic actress, has a killer cackle. Sings comically but doesn’t have to sound good.

GLINDA: female, 25-45. (Mezzo/Soprano) Glinda is the Good Witch of the North. Benevolent and beloved.

THE WIZARD: male, 35-65. Quirky, loveable leader of Oz that helps Dorothy return to Kansa. Non-Singing.

AUNT EM: female, 30-60. Aunt Em is demanding, but loves her niece. Non-singing.

UNCLE HENRY: male, 40-60. Dorothy’s pleasant uncle. Non-singing.

PROFESSOR MARVEL: male, 35-65. Older father figure with an eccentric flair. Basic stage magic or sleight of hand a bonus. Non-Singing.

ALMIRA GULCH: female, 25-60. The cross, bitter woman that loathes Dorothy and Toto. Non-singing, character role.

HUNK: male, 18-55. Farmhand that works for Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Loyal to Dorothy and extremely lovable. Non-singing.

HICKORY: 18-55. Farmhand that works for Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Loyal to Dorothy and extremely lovable. Non-singing.

ZEKE: 18-55. Farmhand that works for Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Loyal to Dorothy and extremely lovable. Non-singing.

EMERALD CITY GUARD: male, 40-70. (Baritone) Strong comic actor, big presence.

WINKIES: male/female, 15-60. The guards of the Wicked Witch of the West.

FLYING MONKEYS: male/female, 14-40. The animals that do the Wicked Witch of the West’s evil bidding. Flexible and acrobatic. Gymnastics/tumbling experience desired.

MUNCHKINS: boys and girls, 5-14. The little people of Munchkinland. Long oppressed, and happy to be freed, the Munchkins will (mostly) be played by children/youth. Group singing and coordinated movement required. There are some featured roles among the munchkins, such as The Mayor of Munchkinland, The Coroner, The Lollipop Guild, and The Lullaby League.

OZIANS: adults and teens, age 14+. The teen/adult chorus of the show, with featured speaking/vocal/dancing roles available. Singing and movement required.

What do you prepare?

For auditions, come prepared to sing 16 bars (or 30 seconds) of a song of your choice. We are looking for something that showcases your range and personality, so get creative. Please bring sheet music or pre-recorded accompaniment. A sound system will be provided for playing any pre-recorded tracks and an accompanist will be available for those with sheet music. No a cappella auditions. You may be asked to vocalize (demonstrate range), match pitch, or sing a selection of music from the show.
Please do not let the singing portion seem intimidating. Remember, the purpose of this entire production is to have fun, meet new friends, and work together to produce an incredible show. Everyone there will be rooting for you, and we all want you to succeed.

If you wish to be considered for principle character or speaking role, you will be asked to read a scene from the script. Please know that the reading gives us an idea of your abilities and will not limit your consideration for other roles in the show. Also, we know this is the first time you are ever seeing these lines, so we do not expect the reading to be perfect.

With rehearsals scheduled throughout the summer, we understand that there will be potential conflicts, such as local activities, family vacations, etc. However, in order to create a rehearsal schedule that works best for the entire cast, conflicts must be submitted to the director (on your audition form) during auditions. Please bring any and all conflicts (including dates and times) with you to auditions for the following dates: May 28th – July 22nd, 2019.

This musical has a very large cast, so please tell everyone you know to come out and audition. There is no better way to give back to the community and showcase the talent that we have right here in Escambia County, Alabama. Plus, we promise this will be beyond rewarding for all. So if you know someone who can sing, act, or simply enjoys the spotlight, bring them with you. Please arrive a few minutes early to fill out audition forms and ask any general questions.
