Fred’s announced Thursday it was closing 104 underperforming stores, including the East Brewton location.

The company called the closures part of “ongoing effort to rationalize its store footprint.”

Just five weeks ago, the Memphis-based company had liquidation sales at 159 stores.

“These additional store closures are a difficult but necessary step in the continued restructuring of Fred’s,” CEO Joseph Anto said in a statement.

The stores are expected to close by the end of June.
