Brewton’s 8U All Stars won the District Championship in Andalusia on Saturday after a close game against Covington County. Brewton beat Covington on Monday 8-2 and was undefeated until Brewton played against Covington for the second time on Friday. Covington beat Brewton 10-8. Brewton 8U Head Coach Brian Wesley said that if Brewton had won against Covington on Friday, the team would have won the championship that very day. Wesley said that since 8U was undefeated, the team had to be double eliminated, so Brewton played for a third time against Covington on Saturday, which Brewton won 11-7.

Wesley said that Covington did not go down easy on Saturday. At first, Brewton was behind by one point, but by the fourth inning, the two teams were head to head with a score of 1-1. In the fifth inning, Brewton took the lead by one point. In the sixth inning, Brewton gave Covington a run for their money. Brewton completed nine runs while Covington managed only three– settling the score at 11-7.

“We always start off slow,” Wesley said. “The kids are great with not giving up.”

Wesley said there were several players that were putting in some major work on the field, but the whole team was in game mode. Wesley said Carson Commander played great defense. Commander caught five balls while covering the left field. However, Gabe Carpenter really made the last inning count by scoring a double with two RBIs. And just like that, Brewton 8U team is on its way to the 8U Cal Ripken State Tournament at Muscle Shoals from June 20-22 where they will be competing against 19 other teams.
