When most people daydream about retiring, they often think about packing a suitcase and moving to a condo on the beach. But maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to swap out your sneakers for flip flops. According to a study done by the financial technology company SmartAssest, Brewton is one of the best places to retire in Alabama. SmartAsset’s study factored in the number of recreation and retirement centers available to seniors in Brewton as well as the percentage of the city’s population these centers represent. Brewton ranked third place in the category for recreation and social activities for seniors in Alabama.

“There is so much to do in Brewton for all ages,” The Meadows of Brewton Administrator Lynda Leigh Stringfellow said. “The Meadows has great assisted living and plenty of activities. The YMCA offers activities for all ages and a pool that is accessible to all.”

Stringfellow said there are several opportunities for physical activity in Brewton such as walking trails, golf courses and tennis courts.

“I think South Alabama is a great place to retire because it is very historical especially Brewton,” Country Place Senior Living of Brewton Administrator Kendra Reynolds said. “Brewton is also a place you can easily feel at home in. Our area is top notch because our community is able to give back to our elders.”

Both Stringfellow and Reynolds agreed that engaging in recreational activities and social events is crucial for the quality of life of seniors.

“It’s very important to keep the brain active, the body moving and to laugh a lot,” Stringfellow said. “Laughter truly is the best medicine, and in Brewton, the opportunities for laughter are endless.”
