Flomaton opens the season ranked No. 1 in 3A

The Flomaton Hurricanes will look to defend their state championship as they enter the season ranked No. 1 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Preseason poll.

Flomaton is in Class 3A, Region 1 with a few other teams that received votes in the preseason poll.

Class 3A, Region 1 includes Flomaton, Bayside Academy, Excel, Mobile Christian, St. Michael, T.R. Miller and Thomasville.

Flomaton lost three regular season games last year before turning up the heat in the playoffs.

Two of the three losses came to region opponents.

Bayside Academy defeated the Hurricanes 34-21 and lost to Mobile Christian 16-12.

The losses didn’t end up haunting the Hurricanes as they finished second in the region.

They defeated Montgomery Academy 40-14 in the first round of the playoffs.

Flomaton traveled to Winfield in round two and came home with a 32-7 win.

The Hurricanes then knocked off Pike County 12-10 in the third round of the playoffs.

In the semifinals, Flomaton came away with a 34-33 win over Providence Christian.

Flomaton took home the blue map with a 23-12 win the Class 3A state championship.
