The City of Brewton has received a Good Roots Grant from the Alabama Power Foundation.

The grant will be used in the city’s efforts to replace trees in areas affected by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

Many fruit and nut trees will be placed at the John L Fisher Community Center where site preparations are underway. In partnership with the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, Alabama Power Foundation’s Good Roots grant program provides funding for cities, towns, communities, school systems and nonprofit groups.

The funds are used to purchase trees that help improve the environment, enhance quality of life and support recreational and economic development efforts. This year, 40 Good Roots grants were awarded by the foundation throughout the state.

To date, Alabama Power Foundation has awarded more than $600,000 in Good Roots grants. Good Roots is one of several grant programs funded by the foundation.

Since its creation in 1989 with funds donated by shareholders, the Alabama Power Foundation has supported Alabama communities, educational institutions and nonprofits with non-ratepayer dollars through more than 20,00 grant and scholarship awards.
