Last week, an Alabama sheriff’s deputy was injured after a high speed chase.

Thursday night, the Escambia County Sheriff’s office, Alabama State Troopers and Flomaton Police were conducting a routine vehicle checkpoint.

“They were conducting a driver’s license safety checkpoint. They do them pretty regularly, at least once a week when they have the manpower,” said Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson.

During the checkpoint, a car fled the scene of the checkpoint.

“When he was approaching it, he ran off in the ditch, spun the tires and took off,” added Jackson.

According to officials, the chase began after 9 p.m. on Old Fannie Rd. The chase continued along the road before crossing the state line. At that point the deputy lost control in the curve of the road. Her 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol unit plowed into several trees off the road.

Following the accident, the deputy was treated at D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton. She received minor injuries from the crash.

The identity of the driver and car that fled remain unknown.
