Many events occurred in the past year. From beginning to end, the Brewton Standard has put together a top ten listing of the top stories of 2019. The following are in chronological order based on previous records and not placed in order of importance.

1. Change of Command

Sheriff Heath Jackson assumed the role as Escambia County Sheriff on Jan. 11, 2019.

2.Hanging up his robe

Judge Bert Rice retired after 41 years of practicing law. Stepping down as Escambia County’s Circuit Judge, Eric Coale was appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey to “fill the shoes.”

3. New Miller Principal Named

T.R. Miller High School welcomed a new principal in late Jan. Principal Chuck Alford was approved for hire by the board of education.

4. Library Renovations

The renovations of the Brewton Public Library in Feb. were projected to be complete by April. In June 26, 2019, the new renovations were introduced to the community.

5. Citizen of the Year

Vance Kilgore was named the Citizen of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce banquet based on the “mark he has left all over the community.”

6. Conecuh River Bridge solutions being discussed

A discussion that lasted all year, the first documented story pertaining to the bridge from 2019 was published on May 15, 2019.

7. Business is all the Buzz

In June, many new businesses opened their doors along the streets of Brewton. Becca’s Shaved Ice, Sweet T’s Boutique, El Rey Mexican Grill and Bar, and the new Dollar General were just to name a few of the highlights from the business industry in Brewton.

8. ProValus introduces new general manager

In June, ProValus announced that Will Ruzic would join the company as general manager.

9. Car crashed into Factory Connection

A sedan crashed into the storefront of Factory Connection in Brewton in early July. No one was injured.

10. Investigation nets several arrests

Over several months, narcotics investigators along with officers from the Brewton Police Department made multiple purchases of illegal narcotics. Earlier in the year multiple arrest warrants were issued for ten individuals.
