Brewton City School Board members gathered at the city council meeting on Monday night.

A special night for BCS Board Member Regina Watson, the council recognized Watson for her “selfless efforts,” and hard work in the Brewton City School System.

At the beginning of the meeting, a proclamation was read in honor of Watson. The proclamation was in recognition of the AASB School Board member award she received last month.

In other business, the mayor proclaimed May 16, 2020 as the Kids to Parks day for the city. “The City Council of the City of Brewton does hereby proclaim to participate in Kids to Parks Day. The city council urges residents of the city of Brewton to make time May 16th, 2020 to take the children in their lives to a neighborhood, state or national park,” stated Mayor Yank Lovelace.

In new business, Matt Sasser addressed the board regarding the compliance with the Provalus Project Agreement.

Giving the report, Sasser shared, “We look at the working capital. We have done so every course since the agreement was signed in July 2017. Optimi has been in compliance as it has every quarter.”

Next numerous appointments for various city boards were approved. These included: Richard Lynn as a water board member; Karen Whitt and Adam Powell to the Public Library Board; Rob Hardy as chair and Marcus Hall as vice chair of Housing Authority.

During the meeting, a medical board nominating committee was appointed by Mayor Lovelace.

Next, 3 properties of real estate were approved for purchase.

“We have 3 pieces of real estate on St. Nicholas Ave. to purchase,” said Lovelace.

The properties are located at 205 Saint Nicholas Ave., 201 Saint Nicholas Ave., and 208 St. Nicholas Ave. The properties were purchased at  $25,000, $37,500, and $85,000, with a closing cost not to exceed $15,000.

The council also approved excess equipment to be marked as surplus property. These items included: 1 12500 KW Cummings Generator, 1 1250 KW Cummings Generator, and 1 John Deere 2020A Progator with HD300 Sprayer. The items are approved to sell or trade.

In other business, Southern engineering solutions was approved to take over the Dogwood Hills project.

Finally the council approved the mayor to be named as gas superintendent as well as the compensation for the mayor and council.

The following was approved: “The salaray of the mayor of the city of brewton shall be the same and is hereby fixed at the sum of $2,400.00 per month to be paid upon the second payroll cycle of each month. The city council of the city of Brewton shall be compensated at the sum of $1,000.00 per month to be upon the second payroll cycle of each month.”

Both the council and mayor have the opportunity for more compensation based on the specific certifications to be obtained through the state of Alabama.
