W.S. Neal wrestlers take 5th place in Dolphin Duals

W.S. Neal competed in the annual Dolphin Duals Tournament on January 31st and February 1st at Gulf Shores High School. This was the final varsity dual competition and the Eagles entered the tournament with a 22-9 record for the season.

On Friday night, W.S. Neal opened up with a match against Dothan High School. The match started at the 195 lbs. weight class, where Jacob O’Den took a forfeit for the Eagles. Zac Currier and J.H. Hurley followed that up with quick pins, making the score 18-0.

The Eagles elected to forfeit the 106lbs weight class and bump 106 lbs. starter, Jeremiah Southwell, to wrestle the 113 lbs. match against Seth Torres. Torres was able to pull out an 8-4 decision, making the score 18-4. Carson Stinson followed that with a quick fall at 120 lbs.

Then Neal and Dothan swapped falls at 126 lbs. and 132 lbs., with Jay Buntin (Dothan) pinning Christian Smith (W.S. Neal) and Aiden Marky (W.S. Neal) pinning Destiny Richburg (Dothan). Ronald Williams and Preston Sims took two more forfeits, making the score 42-9, locking up a win for the Eagles with 4 matches to go. In those final four matches, Gage McCall and Colin Stinson scored quick falls for the Eagles, while Shane Watson and Jeremiah Stauch both were pinned by Dothan wrestlers. The final score was 52-21.

Neal’s 2nd and final match on Friday night was against J.M. Tate (FL). The match started at 220 lbs., where Zac Currier (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Gabriel McKinley (Tate). J.H. Hurley  evened the score for the Eagles with a fall over Landen George.

Jeremiah Southwell and Kaylee Kelley took forfeits, making the score 18-6 in favor of Neal. Carson Stinson (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Daniel McGaha (Tate), making the score 18-12. Then Aiden Marky took a forfeit at 126 lbs. and Christian Smith (W.S. Neal) scored a major decision over Caiden Stone (Tate) to bring the score up to 28-12. Ronald Williams, Preston Sims, and Gage McCall all took forfeits for the Eagles, making the score 46-12 and putting the dual out of reach.

Jeremiah Stauch and Jacob O’Den scored the final points of the match for Neal, both scoring pins at the 170 lbs. and 182 lbs. weight class, respectively. Jala Goodwin (W.S. Neal) wrestled the 195 lbs. match and was defeated by Jacob Turner (Tate), making the final score 58-24.

On Saturday morning, W.S. Neal took its 2-0-pool record into a match with Gulf Shores, who was also 2-0 in their pool. The Eagles kept things close, but Gulf Shores was able to pull out a 48-36 victory. Gage McCall, Jeremiah Stauch, Jacob O’Den, J.H. Hurley, Jeremiah Southwell, and Preston Sims all scored pins for the Eagles.

After going 2-1 in pool play, W.S. Neal moved into the Championship Bracket and wrestled Pool D Champion, Fairhope. The match was close early, but Fairhope pulled away, winning the last 5 matches and 7 of the last 8. Jeremiah Stauch received a forfeit, Jacob O’Den scored a decision, J.H. Hurley scored a fall, and Carson Stinson won by Injury Default when his opponent could not finish the match.

W.S. Neal entered its final dual match of the day with a 24-11 record and battling against Vestavia Hills for 5th place for the tournament. Vestavia Hills jumped out to an early lead, winning the first four matches of the dual, with 2 falls, a forfeit, and a tech fall. J.H. Hurley got things moving the Eagles way with a fall over Sam Deason, but W.S. Neal still trailed 23-6.

Jeremiah Southwell took a forfeit at 106 lbs. for W.S. Neal and Davis Reiff took one at 113 lbs. for Vestavia Hills, making the score 29-12. Carson Stinson started to pull the momentum Neal’s way with a fall over Will Hunton at 120 lbs. Then Christian Smith and Aiden Marky took forfeits, giving Neal a narrow lead at 30-29. Ronald Williams scored a fall over Thomas Waudby to give Neal a 36-29 advantage.

At 145 lbs., Harris Mitchell pins Preston Sims, to get the Rebels back to within 1, 36-35 However, Gage McCall overcame a rib injury against Fairhope to put the match away for the Eagles, scoring a fall over Tucker Smith, making the score 42-35. Shane Watson added another pin for good measure against Eli Bratton, making the final score 48-35 and giving W.S. Neal it’s 25th dual win of the season and a 5th place finish at the 2020 Dolphin Duals!

 AHSAA 1A-5A South Super Sectionals

W.S Neal and T.R. Miller entered the 1A-5A South Super Sectionals with 11 total wrestlers each. Wrestlers must finish in the Top 8 to advance to the State Tournament. For W.S. Neal, Jeremiah Southwell, Kaylee Kelley, Aiden Marky, Jeremiah Stauch, and Blake Chance had matches in the Preliminary Round while Carson Stinson, Christian Smith, Gage McCall, Colin Stinson, Jacob O’Den, and J.H. Hurley received opening round byes. For T.R. Miller, Todd Pace, Copelan Glass, Ezra Carpenter, John Jernigan, Benjamin Harrell, Earl Dolihite, Elijah Carpenter, and Kameron Capterville had matches in the Preliminary Round while Brody Hayes, Orlando Gandy, and Ean Carpenter received opening round byes.

Preliminary Round

Jeremiah Southwell (W.S. Neal) opened things up with a 0:50 fall over Nick Sykes (Shelby County) at the 106 lbs. weight class. At 113 lbs., Kaylee Kelley (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Mark Ponder (White Planes). At 120 lbs., Todd Pace (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Thomas Helus (Holtville). At 126 lbs., Copelan Glass (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Zack Buchanan (Ranburne). At 132 lbs., Aiden Marky (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Josh Bearden (Beulah) Ezra Carpenter (T.R. Miller) pinned Jackson Dodson (White Planes) at 138 lbs.

At 145 lbs., John Jernigan (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Jaylen Thomas (White Planes). At 152 lbs., Benjamin Harrell (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Blain Hines (Beulah). At 160 lbs., Earl Dolihite (T.R. Miller) pined Jordan Rudolph (Brewbaker Tech). Jeremiah Stauch (W.S. Neal) faced off against Elijah Carpenter (T.R. Miller) in the 170 lbs. weight class, with Stauch pinning Carpenter in 0:24 to advance to the Round of 16 and drop the Tiger 7th grader into consolation. At 182 lbs., Kameron Capterville (T.R. Miller) advanced to the Round of 16 with a Disqualification win over Donquavius Adair (Charles Henderson). At 220 lbs., Blake Chance (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Demartra Carter (Reeltown).

Round of 16

At 106 lbs., Jeremiah Southwell (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Land Bell (Tallassee) and Brody Hayes (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Matthew Kenneway (Saks). At 120 lbs., Carson Stinson (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Granger Hicks (St. James) At 126 lbs.; Christian Smith (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Zachary Scott (Cleburne County). At 138 lbs., Ezra Carpenter (T.R. Miller) lost a close 7-4 decision to Cole Fomby (St. James). At 152 lbs., Gage McCall (W.S. Neal) pinned Grant Starr (Elberta).

At 160 lbs., Earl Dolihite (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Connor Norris (Alexandria). At 170 lbs., Jeremiah Stauch (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Solon Lee (Elmore County). At 182 lbs., Colin Stinson (W.S. Neal) won by fall over Braxton Bragg (Piedmont) and Kameron Capterville (T.R Miller) was pinned by Jeremiah McCord (Ranburne). At 195 lbs., Jacob O’Den (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Gavin Robinson (Satsuma) and Orlando Gandy (T.R. Miller) pinned Matthew Nolen (Cleburne County). Ean Carpenter (T.R. Miller) earned a quick fall over Austin Gray (Tallassee) at the 220 lbs. weight class. And J.H. Hurley (W.S. Neal) scored a 10-3 decision over Micah Cole (Tallassee).

Consolation Rd 1

Kaylee Kelley (W.S. Neal), Todd Pace (T.R. Miller), Copelan Glass (T.R. Miller), Aiden Marky (WS. Neal), Benjamin Harrell (T.R. Miller), and Blake Chance (W.S. Neal) received a bye. At 145 lbs., John Jernigan (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Alex Annotti (Prattville Christian), which eliminated him from the tournament. At 170 lbs., Elijah Carpenter (T.R. Miller) pinned Luke Owens (Elberta).

Consolation Rd 2

At 106 lbs., Jeremiah Southwell (W.S. Neal) pinned Trip Rane (Houston Academy) and Brody Hayes (T.R. Miller) pinned Nick Sykes (Shelby County). At 113 lbs., Kaylee Kelley (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Dyllon McFadden (Elberta). At 120 lbs., Todd Pace (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Tyler Cooper (Charles Henderson). At 126 lbs., Christian Smith (W.S. Neal) pinned Charlie Johnson (Thomasville) and Copelan Glass (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Milo Pasquini (Shelby County). At 132 lbs., Aiden Marky (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Andrew Gil (Houston Academy).

At 138 lbs., Ezra Carpenter (T.R. Miller) pinned Clay Bragg (Piedmont). At 152 lbs., Benjamin Harrell (T.R. Miller) squeaked out a 6-5 decision over Jackson West (Charles Henderson). At 160 lbs., Earl Dolihite (T.R. Miller) pinned Chase Law (Prattville Christian). At 170 lbs., Jeremiah Stauch (W.S. Neal) pinned Gabriel Bryant (Reeltown) and Elijah Carpenter (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Hunter Sallee (Pleasant Valley). At 182 lbs., Kameron Capterville (T.R. Miller) pinned Justin Sanders (Elberta). At 195 lbs., Jacob O’Den (W.S. Neal) pinned John Colley (Pike Road). At 220 lbs., Blake Chance (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Damian Hart (Charles Henderson). Kaylee Kelley, Aiden Marky, and Blake Chance were eliminated from the tournament for W.S. Neal. Todd Pace, Copelan Glass, and Elijah Carptenter were eliminated from the tournament for T.R. Miller.

Neal) pinned Tyler Cooper (Charles Henderson). Christian Smith (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Tanner Hill (Reeltown). At 138 lbs., Ezra Carpenter (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Malachi Goble (Ohatchee). At 152 lbs., Benjamin Harrell (T.R. Miller) was pinned by J.T. Coheeley (Piedmont). At 160 lbs., Earl Dolihite (T.R. Miller) pinned J.T. Weathington (Ohatchee).

At 170 lbs., Jeremiah Stauch (W.S. Neal) pinned Logan Guy (White Planes). At 182 lbs., Kameron Capterville (T.R. Miller) pinned Jack Fuhrman (Pike Road). At 195 lbs., Jacob O’Den (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Tekoma Crump (Pleasant Valley). Jeremiah Southwell, Christian Smith, and Jacob O’Den were eliminated from the tournament for W.S. Neal. Ezra Carpenter and Benjamin Harrell were eliminated from the tournament for T.R. Miller.

Quarterfinals

At 152 lbs., Gage McCall (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Blain Hines (Beulah). Colin Stinson (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Kurt Reichert (Prattville Christian). Orlando Gandy (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Keyshon Townsend (Lincoln). Ean Carpenter (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Carson Hall (Ranburne). J.H. Hurley (W.S. Neal) pinned Juddson Cromer (Alexandria), making him the 1st wrestler from Escambia County to ever qualify for the AHSAA State Wrestling Championships! All losing wrestlers drop down to Consolation Round 4 and qualify for the State Tournament with a win in that round.

Consolation Rd 4 (Blood Round).

This round is commonly referred to as the “Blood Round”, because wrestlers who win advance to the State Tournament and wrestlers who lose are eliminated from the tournament. At 106 lbs., Brody Hayes (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Jaden Cheatwood (Pleasant Valley). At 120 lbs., Carson Stinson (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Gavin Monk (Montevallo). At 152 lbs., Gage McCall (W.S. Neal) was pinned by DeTerrance Wright (Thomasville). At 160 lbs., Earl Dolihite (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Kaleb Thomason (Piedmont). At 170 lbs., Jeremiah Stauch (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Bishop Singleton (Pike Road).

At 182 lbs., wrestlers from Neal and Miller met up, for only the 2nd time in the tournament, this time with a spot in the State Tournament on the line. Colin Stinson (W.S. Neal) pinned Kameron Capterville (T.R. Miller), becoming the 2nd wrestler in Escambia County history to qualify for State and giving Neal a 2-0 advantage over Miller at the Sectionals Tournament. At 195 lbs., Orlando Gandy (T.R. Miller) pinned Jude Rogers (Tallassee), becoming the 1st T.R. Miller Tiger to qualify for the State Tournament. Ean Carpenter (T.R. Miller) punched his ticket right behind Gandy with a 25 second fall over Harley Kendall (Walter Wellborn). Carson Stinson, Gage McCall, and Jeremiah Stauch were eliminated from the tournament for W.S. Neal. Brody Hayes, Earl Dolihite, and Kameron Capterville were eliminated from the tournament for T.R. Miller.

Semifinals

J.H. Hurley (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Ben Buchanon (Ranburne), dropping him into the Consolation Semifinals.

Consolation Quarterfinals

Colin Stinson (W.S. Neal) was pinned by Matt Prater (St. James), dropping him into the 7th place match. Orlando Gandy (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Gavin Robinson (Satsuma), dropping him into the 7th place match. Ean Carpenter (T.R. Miller) pinned Russell Clanton (Cleburne County) in 27 seconds, advancing to the Consolation Semifinals.

Consolation Semifinals

Ean Carpenter (T.R. Miller) won a hard-fought battle against Caleb Witherspoon (Thomasville), by a score of 2-1. J.H. Hurley (W.S. Neal) pinned Jonathan Evans (Pleasant Valley) in 1:39.

7th Place Match

Colin Stinson (W.S. Neal) lost a close match to J.W. Clement (Elmore County), 10-6. Orlando Gandy (T.R. Miller) was pinned by Matthew Nolen (Cleburne County) in a rematch from the Round of 16.

Consolation Finals

Ean Carpenter (T.R. Miller) pinned Treveon Bolton (Saks) to secure a 3rd place finish J.H. Hurley (W.S. Neal) pinned Cole Dennis (Montevallo) to secure his own 3rd place finish.
