The Brewton Standard building at 407 Saint Nicholas Ave. has been sold to Danny Cottrell, a local pharmacist, who plans to use the building for records storage and office space.

The Brewton Standard will continue to operate its newspaper from the building under a rental agreement with Cottrell, and customers of the Standard can still conduct business at the building, which will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Originally built in 1974, the building once housed a job shop printing operation while the newspaper was printed in a Flomaton plant jointly owned with The Atmore Advance. The newspaper is now printed in Clanton as is Atmore.  Advances in technology, and the streamlining of processes makes a newspaper space the size of the current one far too much.

“With technological advances and the changing landscape of the newspaper industry as a whole, we have made a decision to seek smaller space,” said Standard General Manager Jennifer Lazzaro. “Our core mission has not changed, which is to cover local news in Brewton and Escambia County, and tell the stories of the people, places and events that make our area unique.”
