The board members were the only ones present at the Brewton City Schools board meeting Thurs. night.

Following the school closure announcement from Gov. Ivey at 4 p.m., the board gathered at the central office at 5 p.m.

“When we come back next week, we have to start having plans in place that have kids doing work at home, have accountability,” said Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner.

“On Mon. and Tues. we want all of our students to be contacted by the teachers.

It is a work in progress. One of the most amazing things though is to watch the people in this community respond,” said Varner.

In new business, the board approved the purchase of a Tahoe from Peach Chevrolet Buick GMC for Dr. Varner.

“As you know the Buick I have been driving for a few years now is going to cost more to repair than what the vehicle is worth,” explained Varner.

“My contract says the board will provide me with transportation. I would recommend the approval of purchase of that Tahoe from Peach Chevrolet with the amount of $44,601,” he continued.

Next the board reviewed a personnel action. Dr. Varner shared, “Coach Drew Lucker has been named the head football coach at McKenzie High School. Congratulations to Drew Lucker.

He is a great guy and has a bright future. We knew he was going to go on and be a head coach somewhere just did not realize it would be this soon.”

The board approved the resignation. Before closing, Board Member Regina Watson thanked the board for donating cleaning supplies to the hospital. Watson serves as the emergency room director at D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital.

Watson said, “We thank yall’ so much for the supplies donated to the hospital. Very much needed and we thank you.”

“You cannot justify hoarding that stuff in a school while there is a need at the hospital,” Varner responded.

“We have an awesome community. It has been humbling and warm felt all the support we’ve received,” said Watson.
