The Escambia County board of education met on Tues. April 28 via video conference. With the meeting live-streamed to YouTube, board members convened a socially distant safe meeting while addressing issues within the school system amid the pandemic.
“We have currently, only working employees that are essential. All of our people are still working. They are doing an excellent job of working from home,” said Superintendent John Knott during his address to the board.
“I could not be more proud of what our teachers and administrators are doing across the county to keep our students engaged,” continued Knott.
Knott did present to the board the Code of Conduct for 2021. “We will make that available for review publicly on our website,” said Knott.
Finally, Knott congratulated Board Vice President Cindy Jackson for being selected to serve on the AASB bylaws committee. “I wanted to congratulate Mrs. Cindy Jackson. AASB has reached out to her and asked her to serve on the AASB bylaws committee this year. It is a big honor for Mrs. Jackson and our local school system at that level,” said Knott.
As far as graduation goes, there are no set plans. “Graduation is a hot topic item right now. It is on everybody’s minds and it is definitely on ours. We want to recognize our students and give an opportunity to our parents’ to be able to participate in that ritual. I still think we need to wait before we get further guidance from the state before we start making plans,” said Knott.
In new business, the monthly financial statement for March 2020 was approved, along with the tabling of the Code of Conduct 2021 for review.
In miscilaneous items, the board approved many personnel actions including the retirement of Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Beth Drew. “I cannot tell you how invaluable she has been to this system and to me. No one works harder than she does. I congratulate Mrs. Drew on her retirement. She has got nothing but good ahead of her. And I certainly wish the very best for her,” said Knott.
