Despite the recent developments with the coronavirus, the country will still observe the National Day of Prayer. Scheduled for May 7, the tradition will continue, just perhaps in a different manor.
Locally, no activities are planned at the Escambia County Courthouse in Brewton. In Atmore, the city will meet virtually.
According to Atmore Mayor Jim Staff any events at city hall or at ECHS have been canceled; however, a Facebook event will take place on Thurs. from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m.
During this time, Staff encouraged everyone, “to take a moment of silence and pray for how blessed we are.”
The national day is observed annually on the first Thursday in May. Designated by the United States Congress as a time for people, “to turn to God in prayer and meditation,” the modern law formalizing the annual National Day of Prayer observance was enacted in 1952. Every year since, the president of the United States has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.
According to the foundation, the day exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families.
It is estimated that over two million people attend more than 30,000 observances – organized by approximately 40,000 volunteers every year. At state capitols, county court houses, on the steps of city halls, and in schools, businesses, churches and homes, over the years people stopped their activities and gathered for prayer.
This year people may not gather physically, but cooperate prayer can still occur thanks to technology. Organizing a virtual prayer event, the foundation is encouraging many to take part in the live broadcast Thurs. morning. The theme verse for the event is Habakkuk 2:14, and the foundation is asking everyone to, “Pray God’s glory across the Earth.” The event will be broadcasted live from Washington D.C. on GODTV, Daystar, Facebook LIVE, and Moody Broadcasting. The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. and will be lead by many Christian leaders from across the nation.
