Governor Kay Ivey on Mon. signed the General Fund budget, the Education Trust Fund and the PSCA bond bill.
“I appreciate the hard work of the Legislature during an unprecedented Regular Session. While we have yet to know the full impact of COVID-19 on our state, these budgets will ensure continuity of government, while being fiscally responsible. There is more work to be done, and I look forward to working with the Legislature in the days ahead,” said Ivey after approving the budgets.
Locally, Brewton City Schools Superintendent Kenneth Varner provided an update on legislative actions that affect the school system including the status of the ETF budget, the capital bond issue ($1.1 million), and the Advancement in Technology Fund ($274,000).
At the board meeting on Mon. Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner shared an update. “As you know the legislature passed a budget today and we were happy with that. What that means for us is we can make plans for next school year based on the numbers we had last year. We don’t expect to have any cuts based on our budget last year,” said Varner.
Varner said one there was a concern due to COVID-19. “One of the concerns while we’re going into next year. Our budget is based primarily on income and sales tax. We expect to see a drop in those numbers and we don’t know how that will affect the future budget,” explained Varner.
Continuing, Varner shared other funds provided by the budget. “Brewton City Schools will get $274,000 That is half of what we were expecting to get. The legislature didn’t want to allocate all of that money because of the crisis we are in. They allocated half of that money. They are sitting on the other half which will come to the school systems at a later date possibly in some other form. I am happy to announce the bond issue was passed by the legislature. That will provide school systems with some money to do capital improvement moneys,” shared Varner.
