Gov. Kay Ivey and Dr. Scott Harris took steps today toward reopening the economy. Announcing updates to the safer at home order, facilities will open and activities resume effective May 22 at 5 p.m. and last until July 3, at 5 p.m.

“Today is the next step in what has seemed like a long and difficult process of opening our economy,” said Ivey.

Ivey considers reopening crucial to the overall well being of all Alabamians.

Businesses allowed to reopen include entertainment venues like movie theaters, bowling alleys, and arcades. Summer camps are allowed to reopen, as well as childcare facilities. All education institutions can reopen June 1. Athletic activities can restart practice on May 23 and resume competitions on June 15.

Social distancing must be enforced in all locations and activities.

Other restrictions remain in place with the order. All retail stores are subject to 50 percent occupancy rules at this time. For nursing homes and assisted living facilities, all activities are suspended. Hospitals and nursing homes have restricted visitation. Restaurants and bars can remain open with limited capacity. Athletic facilities are still open. Close-contact service providers, such as salons and barbershops remain open.

With these updates, Ivey said that the task force reserves the right to change the order. “We can all do our part, however if we start going in the wrong direction we reserve the right to come back in and reverse the course,” said Ivey.
