A splash pad is coming to the John L. Fisher Community Center. Approved at the city council meeting, the construction will cost $37,312.50. RMCC, Inc. was awarded the bid Monday night at the regular city council meeting. Other upgrades to the center will include a bathroom to connect the dining hall to the new splash pad. This bid was awarded to RMCC, Inc. as well. According to Mayor Yank Lovelace, the local contractor understands the demand for the facility and will work diligently on both projects to ensure a speedy construction.
In other new business, a sale of surplus property at 716 St. Nicholas Avenue was approved by the council. The mayor was authorized to negotiate and execute Provalus Optimi project documents and agreements, along with a 2021 loan with United Bank for the Provalus Construction project. Finally, the bid to remove the old foundation located at 108 Douglas Avenue was awarded to Creamer Dozer Service, Inc. This site will be the location of the new fire station.
Due to the coronavirus, the building will feature several safety features to protect against airborne diseases. “We are doing some redesign because of this COVID epidemic. There are some things that we are building into that building to protect fireman and visitors in the building from the virus,” said Lovelace.
From special air conditioners in certain rooms to sensors, the building and other public buildings will be equipped to protect all individuals within the building.
Lovelace shared, “We are looking at some of these acclaimed mechanical air conditioners going into certain rooms and sensors and so forth going into our public buildings. The first is the public library and we are taking this into account before we start construction.”
