Bushel & a Peck Produce is now open on the corner of Old Castleberry Road and Highway 31. Started by three brothers—Dominick, Fitz, and Wheeler Milligan—the farm stand offers a wide variety of produce.
“We usually have heirloom tomatoes, okra, peas, peaches, peppers, corn, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, watermelon, and fresh eggs,” said Wheeler.
Looking back on how it all started, Dominick shared, “We started ‘farming’ after Mrs. Carol Reeves gave us a few chicks to raise.  Our sister sold eggs and we pitched in to help with the summer business.  Making the most of everything- we knew the manure they were creating was a gold mine!”
Beginning as a raised bed, the garden now consists of 10 rows. “Our small garden started as a raised bed by the coop and has now grown to 10 rows that are each 200 feet long,” he said.
The entire experience was a group effort, and the brothers are grateful for the help. Dominick explained, “Our dad has gotten help from Uncle Bruce, Billy Boy, Cousin Josh, and Mr. Brad.  One of the lessons we are learning is how valuable a network of friends can be when taking on projects.”
When setting up the stand, the brothers meticulously place each item with the help of their mom. Wheeler said, “Mama helps us organize the stand, and make sure everything is good to sell.  When the peppers start to wrinkle, or the peaches get bruised- she helps our big sister and Nannette make jam, jelly and preserves with them.”
Peach preserves with vanilla ice cream happen to be his favorite, and the peaches are from Chilton County, which are also offered at the stand.
“We knew we needed something special to sell, so Dad is helping us trade our super sweet watermelons for peaches.  Cousin Josh lives in Chilton County and has a huge peach orchard.  We have been selling them by the basket and people keep coming back for more,” said Dominick.
Open weekends and some week days, Fitz enjoys visiting with customers. “It is fun talking to people and getting to make some money,” said Fitz, who serves as the Director of Sales and Marketing for the stand.
Bushel & a Peck Produce is open until 6 p.m. on weekends by the traffic light on the corner of Old Castleberry Road and Highway 31. On some weekdays, the stand is open in the brothers’ driveway across from the Brewton Middle School.
