A Monday afternoon decision this week has locked the doors at East Brewton City Hall.
According to Christy Edwards, city clerk for East Brewton, the decision was made due to the rising number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the area.
“We made this decision to make sure we do what we can to keep our employees and the public safe,” Edwards said. “We are sanitizing constantly but the virus is still out there and we want to keep everyone safe.”
Although the doors to the city hall complex may be locked to the public, Edwards said business would still be conducted.
“Our drive-through will still be open Monday through Friday,” Edwards said. “For those who need to pay their water bill or court fees, we will be able to handle those transactions at the window.”
With an election season quickly approaching, some prospective candidates will need to visit city hall to make the qualification deadlines, Edwards said.
“We want to make sure that everyone gets qualified for the election,” Edwards said. “Although we won’t have traditional walk-in service available, we will be making appointments to meet with potential candidates to take care of that business.”
Edwards said that the East Brewton Civic Center is also closed indefinitely due to the threat of the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
“We have cancelled all events at the Civic Center for now,” Edwards said. “Any reservations that had been made have been cancelled and deposits have been refunded. We’re not taking any more reservations for now until we see how things go.”
Edwards also said the activities typically seen at the City Hall complex including city court and council meetings will see decisions made as necessary.
“We are just taking things day-by-day around here,” Edwards said. “We will continue to monitor the spread of the virus and make our decisions based on numbers and what is going on in the community. Things have been changing every day and we want to do our part in helping to keep the spread of the virus down. We will take the information we receive about the virus and make decisions as they are needed.”
