The county commission meeting opened with two public hearings on Monday. The first was in regard to an unnamed street located off of Hume Avenue in Canoe.
“There’s not even a road there now,” said County Engineer Bill Bridges. Members of the community were present for the hearing and spoke in agreement with the vacation of the road.
Next, a hearing was held for the Community Block Development Grant application. According to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, the program is available to all Non-Entitlement communities that meet applicable threshold requirements. ADECA has administered the state’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development since 1982. Present at the meeting was Paul Darnell, senior principal at Southern Engineering Solutions, Inc. “This is a project that the commission allowed Brewton Water Works to apply for last year.Brewton asked if they could apply again,” said Darnell. Addressing the commission about the history behind the program, Darnell explained, “Several years ago Brewton took over Ridge Road and there’s improvements that need to be made out there. The area they looked at – the lack of fire protection, a low moderate income folks in there that need some improvements and there are some issues with the water supply- so this is something very much needed.”
Closing the pubic hearing, the commission moved into its regular meeting. At the meeting, both issues presenting during the public hearings were approved. First, the vacating of the unnamed street off of Hume Avenue and secondly, the resolution authorizing the CDBG application.
