With municipal elections fast approaching in August, the East Brewton City Council is making plans by appointing an elections clerk for voting day.
In quick action, the council voted unanimously on Monday to appoint Christy Edwards, city clerk, to the position.
“The election clerk is responsible for overseeing the activity of the voting in the city,” Mayor Terry Clark said. “Christy is very capable and we know she will do an excellent job.”
Edwards said the position involves several duties including securing and overseeing poll workers for the election.
“I will be handling all of the absentee ballots,” Edwards said. “I will also be responsible for verifying the election returns as they are completed before being counted.”
The clerk will also be responsible for making sure that all votes are valid by comparing the names of voters to a list of qualified voters in the municipal election with the purpose of making sure no unauthorized votes are counted.
In other business during Monday’s meeting of the council, the group voted to pay the monthly bills of the city.
Councilman Ludon Simmons stated that the Little League season has come to an end with the final games being played last week at R.T. Johnson Park.
“We only had about three weeks of play this year,” Simmons said. “We had a shortened season due to the presence of Covid-19 in our area. We didn’t have as many players as we had back in March so the number of teams and games had to be cut. We had a good season, even though it was unusually short.”
According to Simmons, there is no other activity planned at the park in the near future.
The East Brewton City Council meets the second and fourth Monday’s of each month at 5:30 p.m. at East Brewton City Hall. Currently, the meetings are being held with CDC guidelines for social distancing in place. Although the meetings are generally open to the public, contact City Hall to ensure access to the meetings.
