Vacation Bible School will look very different this year.
Hosted by the First United Methodist Church of Brewton, the event will be held virtually for the first time ever.
Slated for July 28- 30, the material is designed for ages 3 through high school.
“It is all going to be done through email,” said Ashley Byrd, UMC children’s director.
“Instead of the adult bringing the kids to the church we will take VBS to the kids. Adults will not have to buy anything,” she explained.
The event will begin each afternoon at 5:30 p.m.
The theme of the event is “Backyard Bolt towards faith in Jesus.” The quarantine friendly VBS requires minimal preparation and includes a detailed video, guiding students through the curriculum.
“Parents just let the kids watch the video every afternoon,” said Byrd.
The entire event is designed to take place in a backyard. “If you feel comfortable inviting neighbors and family to participate with you, then do,” said Byrd.
In each session, students will have time for fun games, crafts, bible study, and more. “I believe the games are going to be the most fun. On average it should take about an hour to do each day from start to finish that being said, if they really are having fun with the games, they can take a little longer,” share Byrd.
Most importantly, it is all free.
“The parents don’t have to buy or prepare anything. Just have to tell the kids its time to come and sit down and watch the video,” said Byrd.
One advantage to the program is the fact it is not based upon location.
“We have one girl that is with her mom for the summer and we plan to mail her a package so she can participate,” said Byrd.
Hopeful for a good response from the community, Byrd took note that many other churches are not hosting a VBS due to COVID-19 cancellations. She hopes many will take advantage of the virtual opportunity. “We are hoping we get a good turn out considering no one is doing VBS around here. I have invited numerous churches to participate with us,” said Byrd.
“I am most looking forward to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with the community,” she added.
