Four local girls with a passion for softball will compete in the World Series tournament beginning today.
As part of a travel ball team, W.S. Neal High School players Natalie Wyatt and Madison Hawthorne, T.R. Miller High School player Abby Terrell, and Flomaton High School player Kristen Coleman have enjoyed par-ticipating over the past few weeks. “There’s so many things I love about soft-ball, but my favorite has to be my teammates. This game has brought so many great friendships in my life that I might not have if it weren’t for softball,” said Abby Terrell. Making new friends through the travel ball experience, Terrell and the other girls enjoy playing along side each other. “The thing I love most about softball is all the bonds that I form with all of my teammates. They are like a second family to me,” added Natalie Wyatt.
All playing the game from a very early age, to the girls its second nature to be on the field. “This will be my first year playing travel ball,” said Madison Hawthorne. What she enjoys most is the com-petitiveness of the sport and the chance to meet new people.
Kristen Coleman shared that it was the “lifelong memories,” that she has made.
Many of these memories have been made this past summer.
Advancing to the World Series tournament, Coach Ricky Shelby is look-ing forward to the days ahead. “Well the girls have worked hard all season up until this point. This is the world series week that we’ll be competing down here in Gulf Shores, Ala. All 4 of the girls have been a huge asset to the team’s success for this season,” shared Shelby.
Capitalizing on the team’s strengths, Shelby hopes to end on a win.
“We’re going to take their skills and apply them to this week and hopeful-ly we will come out with a win by the end of the week,” he explained.
After coaching the girls this summer, Shelby says that each team is lucky to have the local girls.
“TRM has a huge advan-tage having Abby on their team and at Flomaton High the same with Kristen Coleman and then WSN with Madison and Natalie. Natalie has hit 6 homeruns already with us this season. We are very thankful to have these 4 young ladies apart of our team and hope-fully get them to the next level of playing college ball,” he said.
The tournament begins today and goes through Friday (weather permit-ting).
