Qualifying closed this week in the 2020 municipal election cycle with Mayor Yank Lovelace, District 1 Councilor Carrie Brown, District 3 Councilor Feast Broughton running unopposed. District 2 Councilor Lawrence Weaver faces challenger David Jennings, District 4 Councilor Joe Watson faces challenger Patrick Hendrieth, and District 5 Councilor Cheryl Barton faces challenger James Royce.

“I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve my city another four years,” Mayor Lovelace said. This year is the end of Lovelace’s second term, and he said he is inspired to start his third term with the support of city residents.

“We are facing challenges unseen in our lifetimes, but I know we will be creative and energetic in our approach. Challenges make us stronger and expose the very best in the people of Brewton.”

Municipal election day is Aug. 25.

Officials said the city will continue its aggressive paving this summer, work on the new city pool and a splashpad at the John L. Fisher Center. Construction on a new fire station on Douglas Ave. is expected in the coming months as well as expanded programming in parks and on BrewtonTV as the pandemic limits public gatherings.

“We will do things differently for a while as we do all we can to keep people safe,” Lovelace said. “But we never stop working to improve services, quality of life and economic stability. One Brewton has been our theme for eight years, and like our hashtag says, this is #ThePlaceToGrow.”
