For many living in the rural areas of Escambia, Conecuh and Monroe Counties, the annual membership meeting of Southern Pine Electric Cooperative is an event they look forward to each year. However, with uncertainty seen through 2020, the annual meeting of the cooperative membership has been canceled.
Vince Johnson, general manager of SPEC, released a statement in the monthly Alabama Living magazine for cooperative members about the cancellation of the meeting.
“For the first time in Southern Pine’s 82 years of existence, the 2020 annual membership meeting has been canceled,” Johnson’s statement said. “This was an extremely difficult decision for our board of trustees to make, but in reality they had no other alternative.”
Johnson also mentioned that the reason behind the cancellation is the current standings of the COVID-19 pandemic that is griping the nation and the world.
“As the virus continues to spread around our communities, I pray that our employees and their families remain health,” Johnson said. “It is my hope that we are making the right decisions and that all of our employees will continue to provide timely service to the members each and every day.”
The annual meeting has traditionally been held on the Saturday before Memorial Day each year. For many years, the meeting has been held on the campus of W.S. Neal High School in East Brewton. The event, attended by thousands in recent years, is filled with entertainment from local, regional and nationally known musical groups as well as a health fair, door prizes and prize drawings for members, children’s activities and lunch.
“We will miss our time of fellowship with you at our meeting but look forward to getting back together with you in 2021,” Johnson said. I hope that you and your family will continue to follow all of the recommendations by our state and local health officials and stay safe.”
Southern Pine Electric Cooperative’s home office is located on South Boulevard in Brewton with offices in Atmore, Evergreen and Frisco City to serve the members of the cooperative.
