Families around the Brewton area can now look forward to the next holiday at the end of the month.

Brewton City Council members agreed on Monday to designate Oct. 31 as the official trick-or-treat day for Halloween. The designated time for the event will be from 5 to 8 p.m.

Although COVID-19 concerns have forced the cancellation or rescheduling of some activities across the country, Brewton’s children will be allowed to celebrate the day using social distancing and masking guidelines as set forth by state officials.

In other business, the council approved the purchase refuse bags for the purpose of reselling to the public. City Clerk Alex McDowell said residents are eager to purchase the bags from the city. The purchase from Calico Industrial Supply was approved in the amount of $15,029. The bags are sold in boxes of 50 to customers for $8 per box;

The council also approved a price of $7,500 to Pyro Shows of Alabama, Inc., for the purpose of a fireworks display planned for New Year’s Eve in downtown Brewton. McDowell said the bid from Pyro Shows of Alabama was the lowest bid among those returning a quote for the event.

The council approved a Mayoral Emergency and Immediate Necessity Authority request to allow continued work for cleanup associated with Hurricane Sally. The approval will allow the city to track expenses for additional man-hours, clean up, debris removal and disposal. Expenses are expected to be reimbursed with FEMA funds through the application and approval of grants offered by the federal agency.

The council approved an amendment of the Damaged Tree Mitigation Program to include the addition of stump grinding and removal as well as fill-in for holes left after stump removal. The program already allows for damaged tree removal on private property through a reimbursement program put into place recently through a council approved resolution.

The Brewton City Council meets the second and fourth Monday’s of each month at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Brewton City Hall. The meetings are open to the public with social distancing and masking guidelines in place for those who attend.
