Christmas Project 2020 is in full swing with shopping and organizing for area children.

Stephanie Walker, chairman of the project, said the need for additional donations and shoppers is needed this year.

“There is a greater need this year because of the pandemic,” Walker said. “Even the children are feeling it and we want to make this a great Christmas for them.”

Walker said the Angel Tree is in place at Walmart with tags representing boys and girls in need this holiday season.

We are so grateful for the assistance of Walmart for getting the trees up quickly,” Walker said. “Those tags are ready for shoppers to choose a child to help provide Christmas gifts for this year.”

With toys being the most expensive part of the purchases made for the children of the community, Walker said purchasing toys is one of the biggest needs this year for the project.

“We can always find reasonably priced clothing for the children,” Walker said. “But, toys are the most expensive part of our purchases. If someone wanted to purchase a toy to donate that would be helpful. Getting a couple of people in the family or some friends to go together to make those more expensive purchases would be good this year.”

Toys and any other items purchased for the Christmas Project children need to be delivered to the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce office by Dec. 14, Walker said. All items should be delivered unwrapped.

Walker said the project coordinators are also partnering with Back Pack Buddies again this year.

“We are happy to partner with Back Pack Buddies again,” Walker said. “We will be providing a new book to be sent home in the Back Packs for the holidays this year.”

With many in the area seeing an impact because of the pandemic, Walker said she is pleased with the response of the community.

“Businesses and members of the community have really responded well so far this year,” Walker said. “We are grateful for their assistance and donations.”

Angels will remain on the trees at Walmart until Dec. 14 with all shopping needing to be completed by that time, Walker said.
