In making a “tough decision,” the 2020 Christmas Parade for the community has been cancelled.

Debi Pugh, administrative assistant for the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce, said the decision was made on Monday after members of the Chamber met concerning the event.

“We agonized over this decision,” Pugh said. “But, we ultimately decided it would be best to cancel the parade due to concerns over the health and well-being of our community.”

Pugh said the group made the decision after speaking to healthcare professionals, looking over guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and paying special attention to the up-tick in COVID-19 cases in the community.

“It was really the only decision we could make given all the information we had,” Pugh said. “It’s certainly was not a knee-jerk decision. We considered all of the information and concerns and sadly came to the decision to cancel.”

Pugh also said that participation in the parade was less than in previous years with only about one-third of the normal amount of entries registering to participate in the 2020 parade.
