1991: A time revisited

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It’s 2021 and 2020 is gone.

It was not the best year, and everyone seems to be glad to see a new year beginning. It has been one for the books with a pandemic,  hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes and for most of us, a lock-up for the past 10 months.

I live at The Meadows and we have been quarantined all of that time and not been able to go anywhere except for doctor visits and one or two short rides to see what town looked like.

I hate to go shopping but right now, I would be willing to go shopping all day.

We begin the year of 1991 and will see what all happened that year. It seems as if it was just yesterday.

The first of the year brought news about our soldiers in the Middle East, members of Operation Desert Shield.

Cassie Manning and Catie McDonald, both of Brewton, won an Alabama Powell contest for their artwork to be used on a safety calendar.

There was a story in The Brewton Standard about the Barton family of Brewton. They had one-half of the male family members in Saudi Arabia. Fred, Ralph, the twins, Cary and Gary, as well as a nephew, Gerald Barton.

O’Neils was having a big clearance sale after being sold to a large group.

Robbie Cotten was named the Brewton Standard 1990 Athlete of the Year as a golfer and Ron Gibson was named the Football Player of the Year.

Chris Crutchfield of T.R. Miller High School and Carl Livingston of Southern Normal High School were named to the Birmingham News All Star First Team.

There was a good story on Jerry Hawsey who  had the “knack” for wood carving. He was very good with most of his carving being wildlife. There were pictures of deer and birds.

As we start a new path in 2021, I look forward to rewalking the path of 1991. Thirty years goes by in a flash and I’m sure I can dig up some things that may jog your memory and mine in the process. I hope you enjoy this year’s journey down memory lane.

Happy hunting and Happy New Year!
